I've thought of this previously, but now in the forum I propose other solutions. In the movie Back to the Future, Doc Brown has a case of bills to use for whatever time era he visits. So I guess my question is: What would be the most cost-effective way to accumulate the most without spending as much? Would you print bills and bring them to the past to fool people? Or bring only hundreds (or thousands) and get your change back in coin from the bank?
How to abuse a time machine with our hobby? :D

Not that I've ever thought about this before ... I'd determine where and when to go and then research a commodity that is readily available today and not so available then. It doesn't have to be currency or precious metals as these were all more available/cheaper then than they are now.

It's been discussed several times. I believe the easiest way is to just make fake old bills and take them back. A $50 printer could make just about anything to fool people in the past.
That is if you forget the moral implications about it. And don't get caught because most of the time they'll just hang you for it

I think I would take some lovely aluminum bars back to the mid 1800s and sell them for gold coins from the D and C mints :)

I wonder why no one has brought up going back in time with a modern firearm. A spray of fully automatic bullets in the air would make anyone give up their coin. Also think about what modern clothing would make them think, perhaps a bullet proof riot suit. Personally I would purchase some older currency now, photocopy it enough times so that I could live for a few months.
Go back to Carson City, Nevada, rent an place overlooking the mint. Get a job at the mint. Figure out the routes that the coins take to where ever they are going.
Then one day I would act very sick and get sent home and/or fired, this would be the day before a delivery goes out, and the night of a new moon or very rainy night. I would sneak off in the middle of the night wearing digi-cams pushing the ultra-flat painted ATV I brought back with me until I was out of earshot of the city. I would then go to a desolate spot that I know the delivery would have to go through in the darkness at least a days walk from the mint.
Once they arrived I would blind them with a 1.5 million candlepower spot light and kick start the ATV. I would Fire a round of semi-auto tracer rounds above their heads and with my wireless PA system I would explain that I could either kill them or let them live At this point they would not know where I was but I would be flanking their position. I would quick fire a tazer at the Shot-Gunner. A quick fire would shock the heck out of him but would not knock him out. I would then use the wireless PA to explain that I could harness the power of lightning and I could strike them down at anytime. I would direct them to throw down their arms and I would Blind fold them and tie their hands. I would then load the delivery onto my ATV, kill the horses, and make my way back to town under the cover of darkness.
Once I returned to town I would gather my things for my trip home to the present. If I had not been fired from the mint for going home sick I would return to work the next morning. Once the delivery guys made their way back to the mint and the news got around about the guy that could harness lightning, had a booming voice that was so loud it sounded like an angry god, could turn the night into day with a miniature sun, rode a metal hound from he11 that could run twice as fast as any horse and growled with every breath, and stole the entire load of coin. I would use that story to act too scared to work at the mint and quit. I would tell people I was moving back east.
Return to the present with my haul. Sell a Morgan to a coin shop to make some money to get all of the rest of my coins graded by NGC/ANACS/PCGS. Then sell a couple of dozen to finance my new "Olde Coin Shoppe"
MUHUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Biff had the right idea, any newspaper or periodical from the future..then you would have knowledge that nobody else has. You would be able to get rich enough where it wouldn't matter how much the coin you want costs.

I have thought about this to. My thought is why not go back and find one of the lost treasure's that have been found, before the person found it. For example: Depending on what story you believe. In 1937 doc Noss found a huge treasure of gold at Victorio peak New Mexico. His problem was retrieving the found gold. And it seems it was very hard to sell gold after 1933, or just did not want the government to know what he had found. Here is one of the links. http://www.mcguiresplace.net/The%20...orio%20Peak/So I am thinking go back and move some of that gold and hide it where only you can find it, in current time. then you could buy all the coins you ever wanted.

Pick a time and head back naked ala Terminator. Using even rudimentary lab equipment I'd develop penicillin, acetaminophen and possibly insulin and injection needles if needed. I could do those three in a year. Being the only source of such astounding medical miracles, I'd legitimately purchase what I wanted fresh off the mules backside and hoard them.
No weapons, I get everything I want and I leave the world a little better off.
Of course I'd stop by and slap the guy who invented the qwerty keyboard and bribe him in gold to engineer the typewriter to be better instead of making it harder to type on purpose. I hate that guy.

I said nothing of killing people. As far as a shooting "rampage" .. it is really a rampage if it happens in a desolate area to an audience of 2 people?
The only reason you need live ammo at all is for the tracer rounds.. take those out of the story and blanks could be used just as effectively.

Any action you take in going back in time will have its consequences in the future. The further back you go the greater the change in the future due to a knock on effect. You might well think you can save the world from Hitler but it may just be you create the circumstances for two new "Hitlers" and even a nuclear war. You could never tamper with history otherwise none of us could be sat here typing these replies!
