I like how you think. Those of us that like to collect have the opportunity to put some of these away while they are still cheap. Putting a couple rolls or bags away could not hurt.

I like to cherry pick rolls, as I have done with State Quarters. As we collectors know, the higher grade coins are always the most desirable and most valuable.

The 2009 quarters were/are much harder to find than the State Quarters. I wish I could find the information from the mint as to how many bags and rolls were sold. And I have not heard which of the 2009 quarters are the hardest to find in higher grades. Like the State Quarter GA,TN and CT's.

So I agree ... it would be a good idea to put some of these away.

I'm trying to fill some coin tubes of any BU Territories I find too.... Both P & D's are my intentions.

Gettin' em' for "face value" in BU right now, also, "couldn't hurt" ! ....

Getting pretty close to having all of the "D" mint ones in coin tubes full, but I've only found one "P" Territory while roll searching though....and it isn't in good shape....
We'll see......

The N.M.I.-'D' is the second lowest mintage 2009 Territorial Quarter.
37,600,000 (only 2,400,000 more than the 'P' variety)

That's less than half the mintages of either D.C. Quarter variety, or the Puerto Rico-'D'.

Playing Devil's Advocate here- so it has the lowest mintage since 1960, what does that really mean? That in itself does not have much bearing on future potential value, 1960 quarters can be purchased all day long in Unc for $5-6 and the bulk of that value is from the silver content. I do not know the CDN price for a roll but it is probably something less than $200. Average Unc coins will probably not be worth more than $2-3 in the foreseeable future but I can see some potential in MS-65+ examples which are definitely not common.

Edit: CDN bid/ask for a 1960P BU roll is $160/$175

I can understand where your coming from. I would not want to put a large amount of money into these betting they will go up. But to put some away, in my opinion would be a good idea.

I will cherry pick rolls at local coins stores. I agree that MS-65+ will have a much better chance of going up to good value coins.

Also ...to me .. it would be hard to compare the quarters that have come out since 1999 to any other series. Except for maybe classic commemorative half dollars.

There are people that have not collected coins before collecting quarters now. They can easily have a connection to them ...coins are from .. where they live .. where their born or now their favorite state parks.
There are BU, satin, clad and silver proof coins, something for everyone. At one point I read a article that the government thinks over 100 million people collect State Quarters, I would think a large number of them will continue with all the territory and state park quarters also.

35 million mintage is still a lot of coins, but they sure are hard to find in uncirculated condition, at least from banks or in change. Which to me is strange for coins that were just made last year.
What will it be like 5 years from now .. or 20 years.

By the same token...... An "uncirculated" high MS grade 1960 Quarter would be nice to have, versus a "junk silver" low grade one worth only it's value in silver. If not being silver, in circulated condition, it'd only be worth .25 Cents ! .....

So...my hopes are certainly only referring to high BU MS grades, and not the circulated ones..... hopefully there are a few other factors at work here other than just being a "low mintage"....that often isn't reason enough, I understand.
And, as I mentioned early in the thread.....that's the most I'd hope for is just a couple/few dollars over face....I'd be happy enough.......more....that'd be wonderful.....but not likely.

Another way to look at that would be.

If a $10.00 roll of 1960 quarters went to $160 in 50 years. then it doubled in value 4 times,
or once every 12 1/2 years. 72 divided by 12 1/2 is 5.76 percent interest average per year.

That is a very good rate of return ... more so in this economy.

Then I would like to guess how long it would take for a nice $10.00 roll of Northern Mariana quarters to double or better. Maybe it would be safe to say that as the state park quarter program is ending about 10 years from now, and more people are collecting quarters (I hope new young collectors will join our ranks) then coins like these could easily be worth double.

Double your money in 10 years is over 7 percent return ... and that is if they only went for $20 a roll, I would think, $30 or $40 a roll could be possible.

Keep in mind that 1960 roll of Quarters, is 90% Silver, unlike the Northern Mariana Quarters which are made up of copper/nickel layers with a copper inner core, which IMO, has a tremendous effect on the present day value, except the 90% silver proofs...Mike

True the 1960's are silver and N.Mariana rolls from the mint cost twice face value now, but in ten years I really see no problem getting four times face for any of the Territories in mint condition. A 7% return is not a stretch IMO.

Demand goes beyond low mintages. Some of the butt ugly quarters like the Guam are unlikely to appeal to future collectors.

One design over another design is of course an opinion that is only in the eye of the beholder. This Guam design does have the "open plain field", and this does have an appeal to some people. Like the plain field of the Wyoming quarter. Some people actually DON'T like it when a design is too "busy" and they actually prefer a more simple looking design with "clear fields"....(I'm not saying that " I " like this design personally, but I feel this is true
Low mintage + high demand, is what I hope will add "a little sompin' sompin' " to all of these Territories value at some point in the future........ whether that's short term, like under 10 years.....or long term like 30+ years from now.
Referring to high grade BU MS examples........
(and even a demand for an unopened United States Mint 100 coin bag of Northern Mariana P mints with some bag marks on them ! .... ..)

Mint News Blog: Sales End for Northern Mariana Islands Quarters Bags and Rolls

Quote:
Bags and rolls sales included a total of 3,595,860 2009-P
Northern Mariana Islands Quarters out of the total mintage of
35,200,000. In this case, (2009-P Northern Mariana Islands) Quarters
sold through bags and rolls represent 10.22% of the mintage.

Today, I was at a grocery store self-checkout machine that was
dispensing BU Northern Mariana Islands-D Quarters, and a young woman
was excitedly showing her friend the Quarter. (stating, "Yes, it's a
Mariana Islands Quarter!").

This was at the same Safeway grocery store where one day last year,
all of the self checkouts were filled with BU LP3 Cents.
I went back four times that day!

Territory quarters are great to collect. Especially if you get one graded at the high end.

Very good future investment. I indulged in the maximum quantity through the subscription program for the R68 two roll set and the SV1 Silver Proof set. I had a strong inclination these issues would deliver some value down the road. I probably won't see it, but hopefully my children will. Always beleve in tommorrow, because now is history.

Thanks, eaglefoot, for bringing this up. I managed to squeak an order through a week or so ago, one set P and D. Thanks again.
