Quote:The latest United States Mint coin mintage or production figures are out and the biggest revelation is the reported numbers for the newly released Northern Mariana Islands Quarters. The quarter-dollars are now officially the scarcest of all 2009 quarters, or of any of the 50 State Quarters for the matter. 1960 IS THE LAST TIME A QUARTER MINTAGE WAS THIS LOW ! ....(At least just quickly looking through the RedBook at mintages....a more studious individual may prove me wrong, but I think that's right !) Oh Heck ! ........I'll just provide the link ! Check this out, it's interesting !http://www.coinnews.net/2009/12/07/...es-scarcest/Will anybody buy the "Bags" from the Mint because of this "news" ? The Two Roll Sets ? Edited by eaglefoot 04/08/2010 5:46 pm

I have two P mint rolls that I got at the bank a few months back when they came out. I've also set aside a few copies that were AU/BU that I found in circulation.

They were the first quarters I bought from the mint in two roll sets because all the banks around here didn't have them. I thought this might happen and now I'm glad the territory quarters are part of my us mint subscription.

Eaglefoot,
I see you have been busy collecting.
I too bought a 100-coin bag for this territory, in fact I have been buying all the territories in 100-coin bags only, why, I am not sure it was the right thing to do but I did so from the Denver Mint, I have known and read about this mintage figure for a short time and, if available, will also order the Philly bag for the mintage status alone, I hope you are well, Mike....PS, I did open the 1st bag I received and you will find, if you open it the bag marks and nicks are all over the coins, as expected, I really bought them seeking errors that would not fit in a roll......

I'm surprised these are still available at the mint!

Some of the early National Parks issues may have even lower mintages. Quarter Production for March 2010 was 23.4 million at Philadelphia, and 19 million at Denver. No Quarters were made in Jan/Feb 2010 at either Mint.... http://www.numismaster.com/ta/numis...icleId=10017The Denver Mint already had the "National Parks Quarters" banners mounted beside the building last Friday, but no business strikes were available yet...... Fun statistic:2000- P Virginia business strike Quarter mintage (one variety) = 943,000,000 Total 2009 business strike Quarter mintage, both Mints combined (twelve varieties) = 636,200,000 Or, the Virginia-P Quarters outnumber the Northern Mariana Islands-P Quarters by an almost 27 to one ratio!

Here's my Whitman lens, filled with six BU Territorial 'D' Quarters that I received in my change: I also filled a matching lens with 'P' Quarters, which of course were received through trading rolls with CCF members! (thanks, everyone!)

35 million ... That is still an awful lot of coins. I don't think it is worth speculating on. An MS69 and MS70 graded example by the top three might be worth having in my opinion.

Quote: 35 million ... That is still an awful lot of coins. And there are an awful lot of State Quarter collectors. Many State Quarter collectors got into the habit of collecting BU rolls. Those have 40 coins each, also some people collect the 100 and 1000 coin bags... It takes 40 million coins to fill one million BU rolls. Therefore: If one million people each wanted 2 BU rolls of Northern Mariana Islands Quarters (one each of P and D), guess what? There were not enough of them minted to fill up one million pairs of P&D rolls! This example may be a slight exaggeration of the market, but there are a lot of people out there who have collected BU rolls of State Quarters. The number of collectors of a particular coin (aka 'market demand') has to be considered. Low mintage alone does not make a coin valuable. Otherwise, base metal world coins with mintages in the five-figure range (many of which you can buy for $10 to $20) would dwarf the value of something like the 1913-S Type 2 Nickel (1,209,000 mintage). As we know, that's not the case. Far more people will want that Nickel than a small tropical island's coin of 10,000 mintage. If one billion of a variety were made, and two billion people wanted to have it, demand would exceed supply! And there you have it: the principle of 'supply and demand'.

I agree that plenty of decent "rarities" are still pretty cheap......and sometimes it might not make sense with one coin having value and not another with a very similar situation......sometimes it makes perfect sense. But, I just don't want to look back and regret not taking advatage of an opportunity when I had it (in products offered from the Mint) "My" intents and purposes have no considerations for anything really "valuable" beyond a couple few bucks per quarter or so ! (More would be nice....but not reality I suspect) And if "the bag" appeals to someone in 30 years.....I hope to get a decent premium for the Northern Mariana Island "P" unopened U.S. Mint bag. ( and my rolls too for that matter) I bet, when speaking of "demand", that when these "State Qtr. Collectors" who are 18-25 years old now, reach 50 years old, that I'll be able to interest more than a few of them in some of these Territory products....and that there will be some kind of "appeal" for them for at least "my" lifetime. I would never cloud my anticipation with a "false hope" or "delusions of grandeur", about these qtrs. .... I won't be buying a new truck or a boat or taking a trip to Hawaii with the proceeds from these ! ..... Just enough to make the effort and cost "worthwhile" would be real nice !! ...

Although I do not have the bags ( 2 sets of the rolls - one from the bank and one mint set) I tend to agree with eagle.
Here is why - Back in Nov / Dec time frame almost every other day I was receiving this as change. Ergo a lot of these Mariana's MAY have already been circulated around here and elsewhere. Time will tell.
Peace

The D's are one thing, the P's are another, this is the point I feel will some day bring a premium for these coins, in BU condition.....Mike

Funny, I just found two of them while metal detecting today. Fortunately they are very recent drops so they are in nice shape.

Actually, the "D" mintage numbers are almost right there with the "P" mintage numbers....only just slightly higher. I think "P" AND "D" mints in BU will be a good idea to have (or a "potential" good idea, I should say)
