I mentioned this on another post.. however, I thought I would make my own and keep track of it.

I am a bit confused with the mint and what they offer.. I want to collect all the new coins that are more likely to go up in value. I dont really care about rolls however I am open to the idea if they would be more valuable than the "sets" that they sell.

What would be more lucrative to collect from the mint - Silver sets, Satin sets, proof sets, uncirc sets or rolls? I believe those are my only options but I think if they are selling a 4 coin set say, of the president 1.00 coins.. later on wont they sell the full set when they all are released, or no?

I guess my question is... when something goes for sale, do I need to jump on it, or will they come out with another set (with other coins) ..

Thanks.. a lot for this answer.

There is no way anyone knows which coins or coin set that the mint sells will go up .. or down in value.
If there was, then everyone would buy that coin or set ...

When a coin or coin set does go up, it is usually because there were low sales for that particular item.

Sometimes it is because the mint stopped production or limited sales.
For example: The 2009 Lincoln coin and chronicle set, sales were limited to 50,000 sets
The 2006 Silver Eagle anniversary set, sales limited to 500,000 set
Both of these sets double or tripled in price right after they were offered. Because they were sold out quickly and a very popular item.

But then you can have a set like the 2008 Bald Eagle 3 coin set, there were a limited number of sets
I don't think it sold out and the price has pretty much stayed flat.

As for your question on the Presidential dollar. The mint has never reissued a complete set of any particular series. You need to purchase them as they are available or you will have to buy them in aftermarket, dealers .. E bay.

If you are going to try and buy from the mint, for profit only, I think the odds are you will lose money. I have never seen the numbers, but in my opinion there are just as many mint products that go down in value as those that go up.

Your best bet it to find a series that you like and buy everyone that they put out each year.
Most series will always have a key date or two.

I see - okay thanks.. that does help.. Do you know if there is a group of people, or a company that actually does predictions on future releases based on past designs and all? That would help me to figure out what I would like to collect as well... the problem I am having is that most of the coins that are released are so pretty.. and I like 90% of them.. however, my budget is not huge so I would like to be able to buy things that in the future the value would go up.. I dont want to flip anything when I first buy it, but I would like to be able to come back 5-10 years from now and make a nice profit on what I am buying now.

For example.. the new quarters.. I assume it would be better for me to get a proof set of each 4 designs that are released.. AND.. a 2 roll bundle, is this how I should buy all the designs that I like from the mint?

I collect every modern coinage that the mint produces and I know other collectors who do as well. Business Strikes (2005 forward), Proofs, Silver Proofs, Unciculated or satin finish sets. Collecting business strikes has become difficult to acquire in the last year due to the banks not being able to order specific coins from the Federal Reserve. Thus, I have expanded my purchases of one of each of the above sets (via US-mint subscriptions of proof, silver proof, and uncirculated sets) to include the mint wrapped roll sets of anything they produce on the main production floor or 'business strikes,'

My thought process is that I want to either sell the two roll sets (un-opened) 1-5 years from now if the price is right and replace the rolls with regular wrapping from an ebay purchase or finding a BU roll at the bank. Later when the series is complete I will have say, 40 sets of Business Strike Territory Quarters to sell, or 25 sets of Business Strike President dollar sets to sell, or 25 sets of Native American dollar sets to sell. I'm doing it all and that may not be in your budget. I am doing it because I am giving myself the best possible chance at a great set of Business strike sets in the future, plus the fun of premium roll searching in my future, plus some extra to hedge against the overall cost/investment.

Maybe just pick your individual set to work on. Silver proofs might be the sets to collect as silver prices are rising and they look great! Just pick something that fits your budget and build from there. I wasn't able to go back and purchase the mint rolls from years past of the presidents but as I am able to find BU rolls at the bank I list them in the trade section and trade with others to fill holes.

Remember to make it work for you. The mint has very high per coin costs and if you plan to get your money back out one day you may have better luck finding things a face value from your bank or close to face value via auctions. Making money straight off the Us Mints inflated retail prices is not going to be easy.

It's a gamble no matter what you do. There are sets that you can't sell for what the mint originally charged. There are others that sell for a huge premium over what they originally sold for. As far as I'm concerned the sets that sell for a premium are worth enough to more than make up for the sets that dropped in value. No matter what, though, mint sets aren't investments. There are much much better ways to make money than paying the mint 10x face for some pretty looking coins that you hope will end up being a small run for some reason. I only buy coins with extra cash that I would have just blown on something stupid, anyway.

My proof, silver proof, and uncirculated sets plus the Kennedy two roll set, Native American Two roll set, Territory Quarter two roll set, President Two roll sets, and the penny sets last year and this year will run me about $1,000.00 per year. Some months are more expensive and others are not as bad, say average is less then $100.00 per month. The rolls are about $400.00 face value and I hope to get at least twice face for them if I break the mint rolls.

On the other hand I have seen some unopened mint roll sets sell for a large premium in the past. Say 2-4 times original purchase price. If I decided to sell the mint rolls I would still have to buy regular wrapped rolls to replace the mint ones so I would have to make 3-4 times original mint purchase price to get ahead.

Notice that I am not really getting ahead with these numbers. I am really just trying to break even. That is my true goal. Along with the one great set I will save for myself of all the modern mint produced coinage.

Just a note, you had said some sets come out and you feel you have to grab them asap, well, the Presidential sets come out and some time later the uncirculated sets and the proof sets and also the silver proof sets become available with the same presidential sets included in all the other sets. I would advise you to subscribe to a coin news paper like Numismatic News, Coin World, etc, to advance your knowledge base and go for what you like.I have learned in this addicting hobby, the education is almost everything....

I also collect UNC sets, Proof sets and Silver proof sets among many, many other coins and rolls and bags.....just my opinion...Mike. PS, I collect what I like, I am also driven to fill certain holes in my albums, good luck....

At best, it would be a frustrating endeavor and at worst, a fool's errand. The US Mint cannot decide what coins to mint, that is at the discretion of Congress since no new design can be minted without legislation to authorize it. As an example, the Mint ran into a debacle a few years ago. They sold a nice blue storage box designed to hold all of the Proof Sets from the ten year run of State Quarters. The box was set up for a two lens Proof Set, one had the quarters and the other had all other denominations. Then Congress got the bright idea for the Presidential dollar series which added another lens to the Proof Sets and effectively rendered those blue boxes obsolete and aggravated alot of previous purchasers in the process. The Mint has now waved the white flag to the ever changing whims of Congress and created a box with modular inserts
