Bought from ebay this week and received today. The seller posted a bad photo but assured me there was lots of detail and luster. I am not happy with this penny as that numerals look too big, the MM doesn't look right and there is damage to the right side of the reverse. My photos aren't the best either but what do you think? I am going to try to take better photos. I have return rights on the coin. Thanks

Return the coin. When in doubt use your first feelings. Did you check dealers feedback before buying? Very important especially if he had any bad feedback.

The seller had perfect feedback although he was not a coin dealer per say. I always look at feedback and check what the seller has been selling and also only buy coins from the states! The seller checked out ok and my only complaint was he didn't post a high res photo.

This is not an authentic 1914-D LWC. The date and MM do not look right at all. This is a 1914-D PCGS XF40 that I am considering buying for comparison. The latter is only recommended if you are expert enough to know the diagnostics well enough to tell if the coin is authentic or not. When it comes to key date coins on ebay you need to stick with certified specimens. At the very least you need to insist on excellent pictures that clearly show all of the coin especially the date and MM. Return the coin.

The date looks rubbed off possibly with steel wool and replaced. The numerals are too large. I can see traces of white metal, 5 o'clock on the obverse. Check to see if it's not magnetic.

I have gotten the coin packaged and ready to go to the PO! Thanks for all the feedback. I knew it was wrong when I got it but all your replies validates that!

This is why I try and stay away from the bay. Especially on expensive key dates. Go thru a reputable group like Heritage. Jim

I guess I am learning the hard way. I have gotten some good deals on ebay but then I mainly only buy from trusted sources that I know. This coin was from an unkown source but he did have good feedback.

Make sure you have delivery confirmation on the return shipment. I would use signature confirmation if it were me.
I assume you have already contacted the seller also?

Looks like the mint made special coins for the vision impaired. Who ever done that needs to change their hobby and find something that their good at. Thats terrible.

ebay is OK if (1)he has over 1,000 feedbacks of which at least 99% are good (only God gets 100%). (2)make sure there isn't a "no returns accepted" listed, (3) make sure pictures of both sides of the coin are posted. (4)buying from "a coin dealer with a lot of sales and good feedback selling coins" is best. Took a poll of 35 dealers at a recent show and 23 of them said they also sold on the Internet with about 15 selling on ebay. Most won't reveal their user names. I recently returned 2 high priced Morgans to different dealers on ebay because they were not the coins I bid on and won. They exchanged them for much better grades than I had won. To sum it up, ebay is OK but watch yourself. I still prefer dealing with a person over buying or selling a coin. Sorry for rambling on edgman/Tom R

Thanks, Edgeman. I'm an Ebayer and all my coins are authentic...every single one of them. One problem with accepting returns is running the risk of getting a different coin returned; particularly coin(s) within a "lot." I list as, "returns not accepted" which may impact bidders' willingness; however, via private conversations over my last four years on ebay, have return-refunded the two requests to do so. I cant say scammers and misinformed/uneducated seller are the exception to the rule on ebay. But honest sellers, private and commercial, are not exceptions to the rule. I've made my share of mistakes as a seller. Recently, I: - sold 20 (consecutive years) proof sets and carelessly overlooked that one of the coins in the earlier sets had become dislodged from the plastic issue slip - sold five sealed 1957 proof sets and (lazily) used the same picture of one envelope for all five auctions. One buyer complained his envelope did not resemble the envelope in the picture. Oops. My bad. At the end of the day; all buyers get great coins from me for what theyve (been willing to) bid. Full stop. p.s. I wouldnt need a picture of the reverse of the 14 D to decide whether it was authentic or not.
