I am fairly new to collecting Standing Liberty quarters. How would grade this 1929:

1929-Standing-Liberty-Quarter

1929-Standing-Liberty-Quarter

Rest in Peace

Very very close to XF, but under by the slightest hair imo. Solid VF-35.

Needs a little more shield detail and wing detail for XF. It appears to have a nice amount of luster though for a VF coin.

Nice SLQ

Vf-25
I do agree that there appears to be lots of luster for the grade.
Keeper for sure

I'll rock the boat...EF coin with weak strike on shield.

Thanks for the input. I bought it at a coin show and the dealer had it listed as EF. I tend to ignore what a dealer grades a coin, especially if I don't know the dealer. I agree that the details may not quite measure up to EF40, but I really liked the look and luster of the coin. I think the eye appeal might bump it up to EF.

I'm curious - Are pre 1925 SLQ's graded any differently than the post 1925 ones?

Don't know if it's XF. If it is weak strike on the shield XF, If it is wear VF.
Rest in Peace

The shield wasn't what made me drop the grade to VF, it was the incomplete ribbing around the perimeter.

EF-40, with a weak strike. The date is a large factor in determining grades for pre-25 SLQ's, so since post 25's have strong dates, there is a difference in the grading.

Here's my reasoning behind "weak strike": The wear (or the lack thereof) her chain mail and on her right leg is consistent with an EF coin. Same thing with the luster.
