First of all, sorry for not posting for so long...again. Been in a sort of 'off' period, but I'm now getting back into it. Anyways, I stopped into the coin shop a couple days ago and picked up a 68 and 69 proof set, $5 each. My plan was to start at 64, go back as far as I could afford, then start with 68 and work forward. Well, I have 59-64, so I got the 68-69, since the 58 and older are somewhat expensive. Well, the guy tells me he just bought from someone a 1956 proof set and he wanted $50 for it. I didn't have that much on me then, but I plan on getting it tomorrow morning (here in a few hours lol) if he hasn't already sold it.

So, you folks think that's a good price, if there are no problems with the coins? I think it is. It would also give me incentive to get the 57-58 hehe.

I typed in, "1956 Proof Set" in the ebay search bar and came up with this:

- one of them, with 4 hours left on bidding, is up to $40
- two others have current bids in the $20 dollar range.
- another has a reserve price of $49 (no bids) and a BIN (buy it now) price of $59
- another has a BIN price of $55.
- another is listed as unsealed and the bidding is up to $55.50

Given the above, I think it's an average price which, you may or may not do better with on ebay. If he really wants to sell the set, ask him if it's negotiable.

Jim

TC,
I too collect proof/mint sets, the set you speak of is about right for the asking, check the coins out 1st.

I would think that from E-Bay you can only judge from pictures and there are shipping fees also to consider.
I would also point out the in the post above, "JHS" has kindly pointed out some sets for sale on the "Bay', You should know that the only "sealed" sets came from the mint in an envelope with a persons name and address on the envelope, like it was being mailed to them, because it was.

Many people and auctions place the words "unopened or sealed" as if there is a chance the coins inside are exceptional, this is simply not true, beware.......

I am glad to see others collecting these sets and when you get to 1953 and above they do get hard to find in a well kept, original condition, good luck..Mike..PS, I also would point out the proof sets have the letters "PC" printed on the lower left corner of the original envelope, followed by the date of the set inside, for instance "1956 PC" OR "PC 1956", letting you know inside that envelope is a 1956 proof set!!!

Well I got it today, and it's beautiful. The guy said he hadn't even really looked at it much, but when I said I wanted it, he looked closer and realized he wanted it himself. He said it had the best looking 1956 cent he had ever seen in a pf set. Of course, he could've just been saying that, but they are all problem free and VERY appealing to the eye. He made me promise not to cut it up, or sell it to anyone but him haha. I think it's the best looking of all my proof sets 59-64 by far.

Thanks for all the info. Oh, and the envelope is perfect too. "1956 P.C." Very crisp, no writing or marks whatsoever, it's just about perfect.

One more thing. I couldn't tell myself, but he said the Franklin was full bell and the Jeff was full steps.

Hey TC, you would expect FBL on the Franklin and FS on the Jefferson due to their being proofs. The only thing you really need to focus on is if there are and, if so, how deep are the cameos.

When we ordered the 1950's proof sets (back in the day !!) we ordered them in boxes of 10; so the sealed envelopes did not have any address on them.

jhs, I hope you are well, I could not help read your post about ordering Proof sets in the big blue box containing 10 sets or a double blue set of boxes with 20 sets in which you state the envelopes were not addressed and were sealed.

I did not mean to confuse any one with my statement, but to clarify, the only proof sets that were sealed were the ones that were addressed to people, meaning addressed on the actual envelope, 1- envelope containing 1-set.....I too have purchased those bulk 10 set orders, they came in a box, addressed to me or whom ever and ALL the envelopes were NOT sealed, sometimes the environmental conditions caused the glue on the envelopes and there were some "sealed", but NOT by the Mint employees, this just was not done, I have discussed this with many people and some actually state the
"envelopes were sealed", again, NOT by the Mint, but from climate conditions.....Mike..PS, I have been collecting since 1963, I am sure others will also remember this being "the way it was".....

Morgan; were the white boxes of five sets unsealed envelopes? I have yet to see a sealed envelope with an address on them. We ordered them in sets of 10 and 5...the sets of five came in a sturdy, white cardboard box...sealed with no name on the envelope.

I'd love to see an unsealed 56, 57 proof set with the buyer's address on it. Then I could say I've seen one !

thanks.
Jim

Jim,

I would love to show you, I will get to the bank soon and take some pictures for you.

I would also suggest, going to a nice sized coin show and look around, I know you will see some of the mint/proof sets addressed in a yellowish envelope, sealed for mailing purposes.... Mike
