I was thinking about taking a BU coin and use it as a pocket piece to see how long it takes to wear down...Kinda like, how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie pop.
My question is, as a pocket piece are you supposed to carry other change in your pocket with it or do you just handle the coin regularly to get it to start wearing down, or both?

Carry other change. It'll help to accelerate wear, but everything will be too close together to create any major marks.

If you really want to do that, just hire some kid or kids to carry a coin for you. They run more, jump more, play with coins more. Also, they leave coins in pockets when washed in a washing machine. They carry all sorts of other items in the same pockets too.

I have been carrying around 4 wheat pennies for a couple of months now. They were about XF when I started and you can really start to see wear on the rims and high points now! I'm sure it will take a while but I would like to get them down to Poor-1 grade!

My pocket pieces live with my spending change. There is also a driving range token, a 1975 rupee, and a $5 Mexican Pesos. Need to start weighing those coins, too. https://goccf.com/t/59839

So Steve,
It looks like I should choose a silver coin...I was going to do a 72 Ike, but it looks like Clad stays pretty strong....
Would you agree?

I couldn't bring myself to put a BU silver piece in my pocket...but have wondered how long it would take so be able to see the first rub on the high points. And now I've realized the Presidential dollar is missing from my pocket. It started BU and was already undergoing color change.

I use the Presidential dollars on a regular basis. When my wife and I go out to dinner we like to leave them for a tip (and yes I do leave more than 1). These coins lose their luster very fast. If you carry them around for a couple of weeks the change in color is dramatic.

When I have Presidents to spend, I keep them in the other pocket. I had some coins fall out of my "experiment pocket" in the car recently...gotta go under the seat and see if I can find the missing Prez. So you are right, if I keep them in my pocket long enough, they will disappear.
