This has been bugging me so I have to give into temptation and just ask.
The last coin show I attended had a vendor with 4 junk boxes full coins that I very much wanted to look through; however I was obstructed by a man who was hogging the entire lot. I asked for the vendor to pass one one of the boxes to me and while I was paying him for a coin the man pulled that box back. He stood there hogging those boxes the entire time I was there.
Question: Is this usual behavior or is it first come first serve at all costs, and I should learn to live with it?
Thanks Terri

If there was multiple boxes to look through, then yes, I feel he was out of line. He should have looked through one box while leaving the others for other people. At the last show I went to a vendor had some very nice Walkers for a great price, all in one box. I sat there for an hour looking at every coin in the box. I didn't feel bad, when its one box, first come, first serve.

Thank you, that's what I thought.

For me, I leave it up to the dealer. If he made an effort to help, then great, if not, then move along. I see no need to cause a fuss.
It really helps to be patient in general. There are so many different personality types at coin shows, in both the dealers and the attendees. I will hover for a while; sometimes I am acknowledged, other times I am not. I often have to make several rounds waiting for a spot to open up at some tables.

I'm more of the belief that a coin show is like any other public experience. We all have different personalities and good manners is essential in getting along. I won't be trod upon however.
I know for myself I would have spoken up right away and said something specific like "Hand that back to me". Not with a "please" either.
However we all deal with minor transgressions differently and the right way to react is whatever makes your life work best for you.

From the way you described it I would have yanked it right back. Most people do rude things thinking others are to polite to do anything about it and often back down when someone calls them on it. While I wouldn't want it to escalate into a fight (I'd call for security if he started out), I see no benefit in letting him get away with rude behavior.

I need a point of clarification. Did he pull the box back before the dealer could give it to you, or did he pull it from you directly? I was assuming the former, but I would have given a much different response to the latter.

I would tell the vendor get four more boxes for Dr. Octopus. LOL! No seriously. The man is acting selfish and rude.

I would have just asked the dealer in a voice loud enough for the other guy to hear, "you said you wouldn't mind if I looked through one of those boxes, right?"

Thank you all for your input. I'm usually not that shy but as you know I am new to this game. The vendor gave me the box and while I was paying for my coin, the "other gent" grabbed it, and I didn't notice until I was done with my transaction. Next time I will know and I'll bring out my crusty sailor attitude..LOL.

That's a situation where I just wouldn't be able to let things go. I'd make a scene just to make him look like a fool. The chances of a guy like that doing anything besides walking off in a huff when you call him out is slim to none. In that case you'd get free reign on all 4 boxes.

Hogging four boxes is not cool. I'd give him the old "throat clear" and "invasion of his personal space" to get to one of the boxes. I've noticed that some people are very rude when it comes to discount boxes.

The only time I look at more than one box is when I am the dealer's only customer. If someone else walks up and starts looking around, I would offer the box I am not using to them. Box hogging is quite rude

Well, in this particular situation......*I'd say, IT ALL DEPENDS ON HOW BIG THIS GUY WAS ! If you could "take him" then you should have knocked him to the floor. Then grabbed him by the ankles and done the "helicopter" move. Then finally, flung him into the nearest wall. After this, you then just calmly turn around and say...."Okay, now, where was I ?" ...ignoring the looks from nearby patrons and security walking towards you. ......needless to say......my vote is that this was just an extremely rude person who hates his life !

I am from another school, I would have the decency to , at first be kind, polite, and ask for the box back, Regardless of how big or small, and if that did not go over well, then as my anger/rage management doctor says, count to 10 and rethink the "reaction", and if by that time the vendor did not correct the problem, then "set him straight" one way or another. I have found that there are alot of just plain cold, rude, ignorant people who when called on what they have done, will open their mouth and prove my point about just being ignorant!
There is no place for being rude, selfish, impolite, and down right inconsiderate!!"Walk softly but carry a big stick".

Wow. It is very hard to understand how someone can be that rude. Had he been on the other side of this I'm sure he would have been complaining about it.
