I have a set of Mercury dimes 1916-1945 that are in a plexiglass case. I was wondering if I should remove them from the plexiglass and place them in a Dansco or simular book. Does the original plexiglass case affect the value of the set itself? Here is a pic of the set. http://picasaweb.google.com/wornsli...509362883794

I would look into what chemicals are in plexiglass, I think its mostly made from fiberglass? Very cool looking, but you dont want to end up with trashed coins in 5-10 years.

Fiberglass and Plexiglas have nothing to do with each other. Plexiglas(also known as Lucite) is a synthetic thermoplastic polymer while fiberglass is silica based. Plexiglas goes by the chemical name of poly(methyl methacrylate) or PMMA and it is used in a number of medical applications so it is quite inert. Remember the old-school hard contact lenses? They were composed of PMMA. If it is safe enough to stick in your eyeballs, you can consider it safe for coins It is also possible that your case is composed of polycarbonate, another inert thermoplastic which is stronger and more durable than Plexiglas. If you do decide to place the coins in an album, the frame should be easily resellable- similar Capitol holders sell for about $50 new.

Nice set. That 16-D looks to be VG, no? I could see full rims but no wing detail.

awesome set! If it were me I would leave it in the case.. and if I lived in a safe neighborhood I would hang it on my wall!

And if you don't live in a safe neighborhood, I could keep them at my house!

I like the case. My vote, leave 'em there.

I bought a Franklin set in a similar Capital Plastic holder. I transferred the coins to a Dansco. Unfortunately I cracked the holder getting it open. If I had to do it over again I would have left them in the holder.

Hey Wornslick - as if biokemist6' clear mastery of the information weren't enough, I found this cool, rather in-depth article after searching "plexiglass interaction metal coin" - it states in short that lucite, plexiglass, otherwise known as acrylic cases do not interact with metal. It actually had all sorts of cool information about the many types display cases and I found really interesting.
To sum it up, my opinion is that I dig your case and it won't hurt the coins, so you may wish to leave it as is! If you let it expose to light, over time it may turn yellowish - the case, NOT the coins. So I go back to "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!" I think this looks much better than a dansco - but if you want something a little less conspicuous and easily stored, go for it. =)

I have a Walking Liberty and a Franklin set in a Capital Holder and have left them as they are. They have been encased for 40+ years without harm so I think they are safe as they are. I have been searching for other coins in these type of plastic holders and they are hard to find so well done! I am green with envy!

Thanks all. That was my main concern, how the coins would react with the plexiglass, and now that I know they will stay in the case.

Sounds like its a good idea to keep them. I mean, its stable and isn't going to harm the coins, and it must look like a good way to display them. My vote is keep the case.
