These do show up from time to time. Although they are rather common and have a minimal premium value, they are true errors and are collectible.

Also, to clarify: Although we call them "clips" they really are coins struck on incomplete planchets.

The term clip implies to some that the coin was struck and then somehow had a portion of it clipped during the minting process.

The problem occurred as the blank was initially cut from the metal coining strip.

Good point. So even the term "clipped planchet"
that is also used a lot, should really be "clipped blank"
