I recently sold a 2008 1/4 ounce Proof Buffalo on E-bay. The title of my auction states that the coin is a 2008 1/4 ounce buffalo. As does the title of the Description, and the first line in the description also states that the coin is a 1/4 ounce Proof Buffalo. Unfortunately I had a typo in my auction when I stated that the Buffalo contained 1/2 ounce of gold instead of 1/4.

Like I said my typo was in the description after the above mentioned.

The coin sold and I shipped it out as soon as I received payment.

Here is my dilema. Yesterday I got an e-mail from the buyer, here it is.

Hi,
I received the coin today. . .Your auction item description states
that the composite of coin contains 1/2 oz gold. The COA states
1/4 oz. Since I am not a coin expert, I reason I purchased the
coin is I thought the coin contained 1/2 oz gold as stated. I ask
that you consider a mutually agreeable partial refund. . .

I realized this was my mistake so I checked out the buyer's positive feedback rating and found that he does know a thing or two about coins. His last 30 auctions have been for a combination of bullion coins and collector coins such as the 2009 UHR double eagle, Indian Head cents, a couple of Morgans, etc.

Not taking that into consideration, I did what I thought was right and told him I would issue him a full refund and I apologized for the inconvienence.

He sent me another Email this morning:

Hi again,
Thank you for your response. . .Based on this response, you
appear to be an honest and sincere person, as am I. To help
bring this to closure, I am still amenable to a partial refund. I
ask for your thoughts here, if not I will comply with your request
to return the coin.
Thank you for your consideration . .

I replied to him that I cannot send a partial refund since the coin has collector value that far exceeds the spot price of gold.

Am I handling this the right way?

I'm assuming a proof Buffalo has a fairly high premium over spot, that the coin sold for what a 1/4 oz proof Buffalo should have sold for, & that the buyer wants you to give him enough of a refund to bring the price down to bullion value for a 1/4 oz of gold. If all of those assumptions are true & your listing was exactly as you described IMO you are doing the right thing by offering a full refund upon return of the coin.

I suspect that the buyer knows that he paid the going rate for the coin, & is trying to get a screaming deal by way of your typo. I'd thank him for his offer to take a partial refund, but would politely ask him to return the coin for a full refund.

I'll take this for $200, Alex.

I tend to agree, he's making the effort to get a discount on it and if he decides to keep it from the kindness of his heart *cough*, well then you'll know it. He might send it back to save face.

Let us know how it goes

Yea hes taking advantage of the obvious typo to get it cheaper. you can tell cause he is pushing for a partial refund. You are making the right decision saying full refund or no refund. Good call.

In my opinion you are handling this the right way. Just have him send it back for a full refund.
