I'm no expert on these, but it looks to be EF-40. Looks like some traces of verdigris on the obverse. Is there?

BadThad: Thanks for your opinion on the grade, and I can't say I noticed the green until blowing it up for the photo. There was a bit of gunk between `FIVE' and `CENTS', but I carefully toothpicked most of it off.

Nice full horn equates to at least XF. I am not as familiar with grading these either to say whether its XF40 or XF45. I dont see luster so I don't think its AU

Did you do it dry?

This coin would be an excellent candidate for my upcoming VERDI-CARE™ product!

Jim: Thanks as well! I'd tend to agree with you both at XF. (I had illusions of low AU, but am probably dreaming.) I get really tripped up on higher grades. The guidelines beyond AU seem to focus on what's NOT there, as opposed to what is. I gather it requires scanning the whole coin instead of looking at the high points like a horn or president's cheekbone. I'm still learning, hence why I'm here on CCF!

BadThad: Yes, I have kept my eye on your stuff and will probably become a customer! I'd hate for that small green spot on the obverse to spread.

Does the obverse have a grainy surface?

cwb: No, I don't think so. Both obverse and reverse have the same texture. I'm not sure why you singled out the obverse, though.

The only nickels I've seen that I'd call "grainy" have been acid-soaked, where much of the detail is lost.

This one has a dull color though, as you can see. It reminds me of a War Nickel; not to that extreme, but in that direction. I'm not worried though. The coin isn't Chinese: I know where it has been the past 30 years!

Moderators and fellow members: My apologies -- it just occurred to me that this should have gone to "classic", not "modern".

When you start to consider whether your coin goes from XF to AU it is helpful to consider the presence or absence of luster. However keep in mind that an XF coin can still have some luster as well.
