Hey guys. So, when I'm not talking about coins, reading coin books, or sitting on this forum learning something new about coins, I usually am calling coin dealers for my most wanted coin, The 1916D Mercury Head Dime, or doing schoolwork. So today, I call this one dealer and ask my usual opening question:
"Hi, do you have any NGC certified Good-4 1916D Mercury dimes?"

So the dealer, -who has a very thick East Indian accent- answers me back: "Yessss. I theenk I hahve one lady, but I do not theenk eet ees sssertified."

"Oh? And how much is it?"

"Ffffiive thouhowthand dallars, lady."

"Ok. Let me get this straight. 5 grand for an uncertified Good-4? You've gotta be kidding.", I say, my patience running out.

"No, lady. The coin ees Extra Fffihinne."

"Hold on here. I call and ask for a Good-4. You give me the price of an Extra fine. Is this some kind of joke?" I ask, exasperatedly.

"No eet eesinhint, lady."

Look, buddy, I'm not a lady, and I don't deal with foreigners."I say, my patience almost gone.

"Wha-?"

"I said I'm not a lady, and I DON'T DEAL WITH FOREIGNERS!!", I shout into the phone, my patience at a complete end.

"Ok suhute yoursself lady" He said, and then hung up.

Can you believe that, guys? A foreigner dealing in American coins? I can understand foreign coins, but AMERICAN coins?!? What is this world coming to? Anyway, in the 29 dealers I called, The lowest price I got was $850-$900 for a Good-4 1916D. What do you guys think of this crap? - coincrazed

Your response was uncalled for. Having an accent is absolutely no reason to be biased toward the dealer, and the dealer did nothing wrong by telling you of other 1916-D's in their inventory. Perhaps the person has been in America for a long period of time, but has not completely learned English. Having no concrete proof or evidence, there is nothing wrong with the dealer, except for any annoyed or hurt feelings you got by the dealer calling you a lady.

1916 d mercs are ridiculously expensive. If you don't light cigars with hundred dollar bills then buying one is going to be painful. That's why my 16 d slot is still empty and probably will be forever unless I luck into a cheap one someday.

If the guy really had an XF 16d and he only wanted $5k for it then that would be what we call a very good deal. If you're looking to spend a grand on a dime then it wouldn't be farfetched to a reasonable businessman that you might be interested in a much higher graded dime that's over a k less than the book price and just a few k more than a worn down pos that you can barely recognize as a Mercury dime. If that's all he's got then it's hard to put him down for trying to sell it to you. America was built on "foreigners". It's the melting pot of the world. You can disparage someone for having an accent but there are just as many people out there who don't have an accent that will rip you off without hesitation. I know "foreigners" who I would trust with my life and I know multi generational Americans who I wouldn't trust any farther than I could throw them. Judge each man not by the color of his skin (or his accent), but the content of his character.

I agree. Couldn't have said it better myself.

As a coin dealer he should have a better understanding of what you are asking for. For that reason I'd be less likely to do business with him. But berating him because of his accent and nationality is really offensive and uncalled for.

Wow--the original post was easily the worst thing I've read since becoming a member here. It's the only thing I've seen here that I wouldn't want my son to read.

Coincrazed, you owe that dealer an apology.

Rest in Peace

Coincrazed....man, you need to relax. Don't get yourself wound up so easily. If you're offended that he called you a "lady", well ok; but this was over the phone and not in person....

There are "foreigners" that know way more about US coins than either of us, so you certainly have no right to downplay them. Just because he has an accent doesn't make him an illegal border hopper that is suddenly trying to rip people off. Quit judging and stereotyping.

I think you are completely out of line in your response to the dealers accent. Coming from a family where half my uncles had such heavy german accents I couldn't understand half what they said and the other half had such heavy "Okie" accents it sounded like they had gravel in their mouths and I needed a translator, I can assure you that no one should be judged on accent alone. As for a "foreigner" dealing in American coins, nothing odd about that, I am an american who collects Spanish Colonial Coins and if I ever decide to sell my collection I will be an American dealer in "foreign coins".

Well my ancestors moved here in the early 19th century from Europe and settled in western Missouri.

They didn't speak the native tongue then either. It was a native American Indian dialect and all they spoke was some foreign language called "English". That's from England!

I think you just earned a week off the Forum to consider things. Actions have consequences.
