It's not unattractive, it has retoned nicely, but PCGS does say it's been cleaned. That would not stop me from purchasing it however. It appears to be a solid VF coin.

If someone were to buy it and submit it to ANACS it would come back graded but cleaned.

What PCGS means is, "We don't want to grade problem coins".

The code 92 referes to cleaning. PCGS will only authenticate the coin as "Genuine." "Not gradable" designation is affixed to the label to protect PCGS. Even if a coin is not gradable, it could still be very valuable. Genuine-only coins are eligible for variety attribution for inclusion in the PCGS Set Registry, which helps many collectors complete challenging sets. I have had several similar coins, that were graded as "Genuine," and still held great value to collectors who purchased them. The coin looks in VF condition - cleaning is very subjective.

I am pretty new at this but when I first saw the coin I did not think it had been cleaned due to the toning of the coin. What are you all, or PCGS, seeing that says this coin has been cleaned? Should I stay clear of "cleaned" coins? Thanks,

There could be some hairlines that we can't see in the photo that indicate a cleaning. I think most people who commented here saw the 92 on the slab and know that is PCGS's code for a coin that has been cleaned.

Quote: What are you all, or PCGS, seeing that says this coin has been cleaned? This coin would have been cleaned long ago and has since retoned, hence the darker appearance. Those pictures are way too small to see hairlines or other mechanical abrasions but they are more than likely present. I am not even sure why someone would submit a coin like that in the first place, even if it had not been cleaned it is only a $50-60 coin

agree with Numiseye and nolawyer. Had this coin been presented raw without the PCGS code, I don't think anyone on this forum could have confidently said it was cleaned and I also agree with nolawyer that the damage code designation biases an objective opinion and that cleaning seems to be at times a very arbitrary call.

FYI for all who don't know: Look at the left numbers in the coin's slab serial number (i.e., in this case 5426.92) The "92" equates to the Ungradeable/No Grade code below.
No Grade codes
82 Filed Rims 83 Peeling Lamination 84 Holed and Plugged 90 Not Genuine 91 Questionable Color 92 Cleaning 93 Planchet Flaw 94 Altered Surfaces 95 Scratch / Rim Dent 96 Refund - No Service 97 Environmental Damage 98 Damage 99 PVC Residue

The images make all the difference and are almost never a good substitute for looking at the coin in hand.

What gets me is that the person selling this has his own coin shop and he doesn't know why it is "non-gradeable" Of course I didn't know either. I am going to keep looking for a 1853. Thanks for the info.

Since I don't seem to have the correct Greysheet, what would be a fair price for this cleaned coin?

The greysheet has it listed as $35 for a problem free Very Fine. Without a close up shot of the coin, it is hard to tell how much the cleaning would affect the price of the coin.
