I'm conflicted right now with what Collection I want to start. I'm thinking of either a Seated Liberty half dollar collection, or a Seated Liberty quarter Dollar Collection. However, the keydates for the two collections are extremely expensive, and would require me to save a lot of money towards them. Any Suggestions?

Do you have 3 cent nickel? Not terribly expensive, but with the extremely low mintage of several of the 1880s coins (under 25,000) can be really tough to do.

I'd go with halves right now. Not sure I can justify it - just a gut feeling. What grade is your collection going to be?

Halves are nice, look at the mintages and you see plenty of inexpensive examples that are under 500K mintage. Seated dimes and Half Dimes too.

I used to collect these, now I do Mexican Republic coinage.

No matter what you end up with makes sure it's for enjoyment! Exhibit them at a local coin show.

No, but I am trying to fill out the Dansco 6109 (3 Cent Silvers + 20 Cent Pieces) - That album does not require 1863-1873, though I may try to get some of those rarer dates and buy an additional blank page. I have never started the 20 Cent piece section yet, but may sometime in the future when I can afford it.

I think I am going to try to go for VG-8 to EF-40, with key dates (including the King of the series, the 1878 S - Most likely an AG-3 or G-4 if I am lucky enough to get one) in AG-3 to VG-8, unless the key date doesn't change much in price for the higher conditions.

I do not know much about the sets. I was planning on Seated half dimes, but I found the Quarters and Half Dollars much more intriguing because I think the Eagle looks cool. I will probably go for the Halves, and wait out on the Major Key Dates.

Like the 1851-O, 1856-S, 1857-S, 1859-S, 1860, 1860-S, 1862, 1863, 1864, 1868, and the 1891?

The only concerns with this set is how I will obtain the 1842-O Small Date - Small Letters, 1844-O Doubled Die, 1847 7 over 6, 1850, 1851, 1852, 1855-S, 1866-S No Motto, 1870-CC, 1871-CC, 1873 Open 3, 1873-CC (Both Varieties), the 1874-CC, 1879 to 1890, and most of all, the 1878-S.

Wow, what is the story on the 1878S being so much higher value then the 1879, when the 1879 has 1/3 the mintage (not the 12,000 1878S makes it common)?

I like the idea of starting a challenging set. Good luck with whichever set you choose.

To Nod2003:

Yeah, $21K just in G-4! There were probably a lot of 1878-S' that were melted, lost, destroyed, etc. Probably more than the 1879. Either that, or a lot of 1878-S' are in hoards, waiting to be revealed.

To nolawyer:

Thank you. I'm going to go with Seated Liberty halves.
