I don't quite understand this one... http://cgi.ebay.com/1916-D-Barber-D...em53e14d23aeThe coin has been cracked out, but it looks like NGC once certified it as a 16-D dime, but with an added mintmark. I thought something like this would just come back "body bagged". My understanding is that if it has an added mintmark, then it is not a 16-D dime. I checked the serial number and sure enough, the info matches what is on the label in the picture.

Never seen anything like it. Is this their way of saying, "coin is genuine, mintmark isn't?"

That makes no sense. But, neither does listing it as a Barber dime, either.

I was thinking at least the seller is being straight up about it. But, I'm still absolutely baffled as to why they would certify an added mintmark.

What does a "body bag" look like? Surely they don't put labels like these on body bags, do they?

The owner had or found a 16-D Mercury dime. He sent it to NGC. It was not genuine, so NGC put it in a bodybag holder with the label. Pretty simple.

So, is this what a "body bag" looks like? They come back slabbed, just labeled with what's wrong? I've never seen a "body bag", or really given it any thought before.

Quote: The coin has been cracked out... Why do you think it was cracked out? I doubt it was ever in a slab. It was bodybagged and the label was sent back with the bodybag. At least that is what I would assume. NGC providing a label like that is odd though.

Quote: Why do you think it was cracked out? That was an assumption on my part. I figured it was once in a slab since there was a label. I didn't know they made a label for a bodybag coin that looks like a regular label.

Do they actually assign body bags a certification number? I didn't realize that.

I'm not gettin' it; really. A listing by a "coin dealer" I dont know why NGC would only put, "Added Mint Mark" Mebbe they assume even the least educated would see and know which coin it is, saving ink and not printing, " Mercury dime" Still not gettin' it.
