Quote: Every coin is assigned a certification number when it arrives, that way they can track it. The number is assigned by the person who unpacks the shipment and enters the coins into the computer long before the graders ever see the coin. Oh, ok. thanks for the info. Do they create a label like that for every body bag?

Quote: Yep. Quite deceptive for the seller to claim it has been certified by NGC. Technically, it has been "certified" as a fake. That is, NGC issued an opinion that it has an added mint mark and is not a genuine coin. It does seem deceptive, but for many it will add value and hopefully an extra layer of protection to the seller (disclosing it as a fake).

jbuck, hear what you are saying, but the coin is not in a slab, so it isn't certified. There is no way of even knowing if that is the coin that was submitted.

Quote: jbuck, hear what you are saying, but the coin is not in a slab, so it isn't certified. Correct. Which is why I said "technically" and then put "certified" in quotes. I am just playing the devil's advocate.

I was under the impression that you aren't technically allowed to sell a counterfeit on ebay, even if it is disclosed as such(unless it had "copy" or "replica" stamped on it in plain view). Though I don't personally have a problem with his auction, I wouldn't be surprised if it was removed. What you say bryan is absolutely true, which makes this sale a very dangerous game as that coin would go for thousands if genuine.

Johnny, as I understand it, that coin is considered an "imitation", even though it otherwise would still legal tender...and must be stamped with the word "COPY" on it. Directly from the Hobby Protection Act: Quote: (d) Imitation numismatic item means an item which purports to be, but in fact is not, an original numismatic item or which is a reproduction, copy, or counterfeit of an original numismatic item. Such term includes an original numismatic item which has been altered or modified in such a manner that it could reasonably purport to be an original numismatic item other than the one which was altered or modified.

Yeah, that's true. Technically it is not a counterfeit, but a genuine "altered mm" coin.

just got an email -- ebay removed the listing 400122888285 - 1916 D Mercury dime Added Mintmark We're sorry to tell you that the item isn't available for purchase anymore. We removed the listing because it likely fell into one of these three categories: -- The listing doesn't follow ebay guidelines. -- The item isn't allowed on ebay or can only be listed under certain conditions. -- The listing contains pictures or words that may have violated copyright or trademark rights. This is disappointing for everyone, but sometimes it's an action we have to take to protect you as a buyer.
