My best guess is VG-8, and it may be a 51/81? =)

That's funny you say that because when I received it, theere was a piece of paper saying it may be an overdate. How can there be a 51 over an 81? Wouldn't that mean that the die was used for 1881 and then used again for 1851? That doesn't make sense to me. It seems backwards.

There are 45 varieties listed for this coin. Do some research, Kis....see if yours is a variety, common, rare, or scarce.

I did some prelim research online to try and identify which variety this coin could be but didn't find any pictures or descriptions which could help me identify it. Does anyone know a good book or other resource that I can use to ID this variety? I looked at some other 51/81 overdates but didn't find any that matched. I think the biggest trait that will help me ID this is that the 5 seems to be connected to the hair of the bust whereas other coins have a gap. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

KisNap, there are no pictures of books on Tom Reynolds site, but I can assure you, he is one of the most respected early copper specialists I have had the pleasure of meeting. The books on his site are among the best there are. You should drop him an email with a specific question or better yet, an image of your coin. He has helped me attribute a couple Colonials in the past. http://www.earlycoppers.com/
