Received the following from the US Mint today: The United States Mint will be processing your subscription order for the 2010 United States Mint Uncirculated Coin Set in approximately 4 weeks So Yay! I hope they finally stop the satin finish nonsense of the past few years.

We can hope all we want, but with them issuing the new quarter sets in both satin finish and circulation strike, that hope has become hopeless.

I've only heard that they (the Mint) are "thinking about it". But I doubt that they will be "Satin Free" this year......

No official word about changing, so satin it will be.

So if they keep going with SF coins when are the folder/album makers going to cave and update their products?

Well, it took Dansco at least until the late 1980's to figure out that the San Francisco mint no longer made S-mint coins for circulation (last one being the 1974-S). My Dansco 7100 (non-proof version), bought in 1985, had printed holes going through to 1987-S! Fortunately, the pages are very easy to replace.

I got that same e-mail today. The first thing I did was go to the site to see if they were going to stop the satin nonsense, and couldn't find anything on it.
If the uncirculated sets are going to contain the satin finishes, I don't want one.

Well, if the Mint is taking the unprecedented step of issuing a "Circulating Coin Set" with the 2010 business strike Quarters, why couldn't they issue a complete "Circulating Coin Set" with all of the P&D 2010 business strike coins? Like my sig says, this would make too much sense.....

Just curious, why is it that many object to the satin finish? Is it simply because it's not a business strike? Or is there some other reason?

I think people who collect complete sets don't like them because it means they have to get two of every coin now. One business strike penny, nickel, dime, 5 quarters, half, 4 dollars, and natives from both the philly and Denver mints. That means extra pages to add to danscos, the hardships of finding BU business strikes, and the added expense of collecting twice as many coins. It's just a pain and no one knows how long they will have to do this because the mint could just one day stop making satin coins.

Quote: why is it that many object to the satin finish? Is it simply because it's not a business strike? It used to be, that one could just buy the Uncirculated Mint Set and get all the coins you'd need for your P&D slots in your albums. These of course, "used to be" Business Strikes. Since the advent of "Satin Finish", the waters have been muddied. Now, as Kurt put it perfectly, we have to go through painstaking efforts to find the P&D's in a BU Business strike to put into our albums. The Satin Finish is, in every single way, a completely DIFFERENT coin. So, it's not that I don't find them unique and beautiful...but it just so complicates everything. It's so much harder now, to find that really good looking Biz. strike specimen in every denomination, and, most importantly, in EVERY MINTMARK TOO. If you generally only see BU D's in your area (like me), by the time I see a new P mint coin....it's pretty beat up. So, this is why....in the old days, you'd get BU specimens of the Business Strike P's and the Biz. strike D's in the Mint Set.... this is taken away from us all now.The Mint is making a new effort to provide some biz. strikes in the form of some Sets....at a very high price.....and the rolls are very high priced.....so......it just sucks ! Many collectors will not make an effort to differentiate this in their albums....they'll just put a Satin right in the Biz. strike hole....and not add extra pages or anything else..just continue on as if it's the same coin....and that's fine.....heck.....I may do it too with some denominations......BUT I JUST DON'T LIKE THE CONSTERNATION OF IT ALL ! ....AND THE EXTRA DIFFICULTY THAT THIS CREATES !

The Satin Finish coins are as different from Business Strikes as the Proof coins are. Different minting process, different type.

As I keep saying, the subscription page STILL says they will be satin finish.

I like the look of the satin finish coins, and I only put these in my albums. I don't worry about getting all the business strikes. Instead, I reserve those to find just for fun. Back when there were only business strikes, getting the mint set meant that there was no more excitement in searching through my change to look for a quarter I was missing. So now this is restored for me.

I ordered 2 mint sets last year from the mint web page. I don't see it having them available. You guys must have gotten an email or something to pre-order? I see that there are no 2010 D Jefferson nickels minted to date. Perhaps the only way to get a 2010 D Jefferson nickel is to buy a mint set, unless they are not included in this years set? I don't like the satin coins until I have them. What really bothers me is not the coins but the worry they cause me if I am going to be able to get all the coins I need to continue building my main set. The satin coins are easier to acquire, it's the business strikes that are scalped on ebay. Then it is a crap shoot for quality and a waiting game for lower prices.
