Hello gang and let me introduce myself. My name is George and I have been left a small Canadian coin collection through my family.I have had it for years and just now have dug it out to see if I can find it's value. I have stumbled across this forum and hope your expertise will help.
My collection is all King George coins.I have one cent pieces, 5 cent pieces, 10 cent pieces, 25 cent pieces and also 50 cent pieces.
What made me curious is that when I looked on E-Bay, some of the prices for some of the same coins I have are very high. For example, I have a 1919 half dollar in great shape and one guy on ebay is asking over $5000.00 for his!! Is this coin really gonna fetch that?
In no way at all am I familiar with coin collecting so I have no clue as to what to do here so any help would be great! I am no fool either and will not be selling these until I am sure of their real value. They may be worth next to nothing, who knows?
I do have a digital camera and could take pics I guess but for now what are your suggestions?
Thanks in advance if you can help me in any way.
Geo

Hi George. Images are a must. A cheap scanner I find easier than a camera for quick images. In order to defend your "stuff" you must educate yourself. Please purchase Charleton's 64th Numismatic It will guide you.

Get all the info you can find before you make any decisions on what to do with your collection. Who knows, you just may get caught up in the insanity and start collecting. Welcome to the forum.

Coin value is based on rarity and grade. You can quickly learn about grading from here: http://www.coinoisseur.com/GradingCoins.html

...scroll down and there are excellent pics, just click on the monarch e.g. George V and compare it to your coin to get a rough idea of its grade.

Next, pick up a copy of Canadian Coin News at your local newstand or magazine retailer for $3.50. Turn to the "Trends" section. The values of your coins are there, once you know your grade.

For example, if your 1919 50¢ is this grade:

http://www.coinoisseur.com/EF-40_GeoV.jpg

...then your coin is worth $150 at retail or auction, or roughly half that from a dealer if you're lucky.

Post some pics here (obverse and reverse plse) and you will expert opinions from the most knowledgable coin collectors in the world, within minutes, for free!

Well thanks for the replies. Very usefull indeed. So with all your knowledge what are some of the coins I may have that would be worth looking into a little more. Are there some King George coins that are sought after more than others?
Thanks again and I will try and upload some pics soon.

Is that the first time you've photographed a coin? Curious.

Welcome to the forum.
Maybe you already know about that but I prefer to say again: never ever try to clean the coins.

The image is from a very high end Canon Scanner. There are only two scanners of this type in the world. The scanner is worth lots of coin ( get it? )!
I got all these coins and so far they are worthless!
