I am new to the forum as well as coin collecting. I have asked for advice recently on this forum and was given good insight. I am a young collector (college student) and am still seeking advice. As a student my budget is limited so I have been sticking with modern circulating coins. However, I do like to dabble in older coins if I can find decent deals. I live in SE Alabama and am looking for any quality antique shops or other sources of coins. If there are any Alabama collectors out there, do you have any ideas or sources for me? Thanks for your help!

I'm in the Auburn/Opelika area & I can tell you the pickings are pretty slim. The nearest coin shop is about 45 minutes away in Columbus(Georgia) & they don't have much of a selection. Most of the antique malls have coins. Unfortunately most of the coins are overpriced, cleaned or both.

I am actually in the Auburn/Opelika area. Trdhrdr007 you are exactly right. The pickings are very slim around here. I drive through Birmingham on a regular basis...are there any shops worth speaking of there?

I have bought several coins at a place called Southern Coins and Collectibles in Birmingham. It is on Hwy 31 just north of the Galleria. By the way-War Eagle!

I can't remember the name of the place but there used to be a coin shop in downtown Homewood. If I remember correctly 31 runs through Homewood, which is north of the Galleria, so it may be the same one jprine is talking about.

There is also a guy that is always at the flea market on 280 in Smith's Station, halfway between Opelika & Columbus. He sets up in one of the "shacks" in the permanent area of the flea market. Lots of his coins are cleaned so look closely if you go there.

I graduated from AU in 1989......War Eagle!

I didn't realize there were any War Eagles on here! I will graduate next summer, so maybe I will get a job in an area with a better coin market. Thanks for the locations. Southern Coins has a website but it is under repair, so I may have to check that place out.

Southern Coins website is very poor compared to the store. It is pretty small, but has a pretty good selection of coins. Ask for Ethan.
