This is probably Die Deterioration but I seldom see "this" kind. I was wondering why the lines are going in two different directions? The angled lined on NIT and then the lines between the letters and the rim run in a different direction, just curious and wanted to share. Thanks all,
John1

John1 - what year is that cent? I have one (I'll have to dig it out) that I think has the same features on the same letters. It looks like a shadow of the letters created by a light shining from the left.

Edit: Oops, never mind, I just noticed the subject line again. I'll have to put up some pix of mine.

Here's the one I found, also a 1971 D. It's the brother of yours, John.

Just die wear. Trails are found mostly on the single squeeze coins.

This is most likely die abrasion from a rotary wire brush "Dremel tool" sort of thing...which (in my opinion) is the same thing that causes the "trails".

The way to find out whether the two of you have the same die there is to photograph the mintmark area and compare them for position. Because mintmarks were applied to the dies by hand, having two coins with similar anomalies AND the mintmark in an identical position would be rather unlikely if they are two different dies.
