Great link jbuck ..... I never knew that CCF resource existed.

All the historical info New Mismatist needs is contained in the library.

There are several fun facts about this coin ..... and they all are contained in the link jbuck provided ....

This coin was minted in 1925 at the San Francisco mint ..... but the mint mark was left off by mistake. Ooooops.

As part of the publicity to sell the coins the entire mintage of 50,028 coins was loaded into a 12-cylinder DeHavilland and flown from San Francisco to Vancouver ..... with the pilot starting the round trip in Vancouver. It was quite an aeronautical feat for the time ..... a round trip of nearly 11 hours with nearly 1500 pounds of cargo on the return leg.

If that plane had gone down .... well .... no Vancouver Halves for us today.

As to this coin ...... the design in high relief makes its very difficult to find one without traces of wear ..... and they were not well cared for following that plane trip.

To my eye this coins shows signs of friction/rub at the high points ..... the hair of Dr. McLoughlin on the obverse and the thighs of the unnamed soldier on the reverse.

I call it AU-58 ..... although it is possible a TPG would recognize the nature of the design call it MS-64+.

Great coin ..... Thanks for sharing.

David

I can imagine that DeHavilland loaded with coins must have been something to see in that time. Now that's marketing!

I see what you're saying about the rub. It's interesting to see the high points on each coin and how they're obviously where the wear is most easily seen.

Oh, and if you see this and still have your Texas 50c in the marketplace for sale, I'd be happy to buy it. As a Native Texan, I'd love for it to be the first coin "I" add to the collection. :D

Pull up a stool (as you have) and contribute to the forum (as you have) ....... and soon enough you will have enough posts to qualify to 'shop' for coins here ...... you need 50 quality posts.

Will do, David. Don't go selling that thing to some non-Texan. :)

The good news is that I really love the look of this coin and will enjoy it for years to come.

The bad news.

Genuine - 92 (Cleaned)

I can't say I agree with the assessment. Don't get me wrong, I've seen cleaning marks on plenty of other coins in my possession, but I just don't see it on this one.

Bummer about the .92 cleaned result. I do not see the cleaning from here.

What you are seeing New Mismatist is the current TPG crackdown on grading standards ...... and it is tough to figure out just exactly what the 'professional opinion' will be.

I should write a post on my newbie learning mistakes with raw coins and TPG ...... and the $$$$ it cost me in learning!

Keep on showing these great coins ...

I hear you, David. I've looked at this coin over and over with a 10x loupe and can't see any evidence of "cleaning" that I would recognize as such. This doesn't mean it hasn't been cleaned, but I just don't see it.

And before anyone goes off thinking that maybe I'm just NOT wanting to see the cleaning marks, let me tell you this. I've looked at hundreds of coins with the 10x jeweler's loupe I have, and can clearly see cleaning marks on other coins. Including.

An 1895-O Morgan dollar that looks to be an otherwise high-grade coin.

Now I'm no grading expert, but I've come to recognize what I think are the telltale signs of cleaning (consistent hairlines, lack of luster, etc.). But I just don't see it with this coin.
