In just about everything I purchase, I try to be careful that I'm not getting buried in a coin, unless it's something I desperately won't and don't care about price (and I don't recall the last time I made such a purchase).

I kind of like the old Americas type coinage and was drawn to this 1795 ½ Mexico Real, graded as VF. I paid $28 for it (the consignor originally wanted $36 and another dealer wanted it at $25). However, a dealer friend of mine told me that I could buy them all day long at around $5 and I got ripped. Is that true?

The stuff I say on ebay definitely was cheap but none of them looked very good. I really like the look of mine. It appears original, no problems, and lots of detail.

What do you value this at (if you had to resell it)?

By the way, where does it indicate on the coin that it's only a one half Real?

It is a 1/2 real by virtue of not having a "1", "2", "4", or "8" to the right of the shield which would designate it as a larger denomination. (Actually the easiest way to tell is by the size)
As far as value, I think you can find them cheaper if you hunt for them and go to a dealer that handles large amounts of Spanish Colonial Coins. Anyway you look at it, you have a great 200yr old coin with a lot of history that circulated here in the USA up until 1857.

Nice coin - real - about VF and would retail at $ 15 to $25 in a typical shop. I have seen them lower in a few US shops where they have too many for local demand but that is hit or miss. It is an interesting variety with a repunched mint mark - no real premium just a curiosity. A $5 price tag is clearly wholesale not retail and $36 was totally wishful thinking.
