So I am sitting here a little bored and thinking of random coin related matters. Such an obsessive thing to do. LOL

What are your thoughts concerning collecting subsets? My thinking is the Steel cents and War Nickels. I think you could put together a truly outstanding set of each for very little money compared to most other sets.

There is also something that I like about the War silvers. LOL Even the worn down ones are very interesting to me. I am very tempted to just buy every one that I come across, but not just yet... gotta get the kid braces.

Anyway, just some random thoughts.

Personally I think putting together subsets of coins is a tremendous
amount of fun. Also the point you made about less money being involved
means that a VERY VERY NICE specimens can be put in the entire set.
The look of the set can be consistent across the entire collection.
How many of us have seen a Jefferson nickel Dansco where the older
coins and key dates are in much different condition than the rest of the collection?
Very Cool Idea with the War Nickels. I hope you don't mind if I borrow
it. Along with my mild case of "Obsessive Compulsive Disorder"
with Eisenhower's See it Gotta Buy it. (Just call me Jerry)
I also have it with War Nickels.

I,too, have a subset of War Nickels. I only put BU War Nickels in my Dansco and in my set of just War Nickels and they look impressive. I lack only the 44-D & 44-S having completed the subset. I also have several subsets of the Westward Journey nickels. I bet there are also a lot of Birth Year sets put together as well.

ROFL Razor! I started that a few weeks ago. I went to a coin store in San Fran and found a bunch of those Whitman year holders (1cent - 50cent) for 15 cents each so I bought all that he had. Then I had to figure out what to do with them. LOL So I decided to do that.

That is the great thing about coin collecting, you can collect whatever you like in whatever configuration you like. Your idea on the subsets AKA short sets used to be quite popular back in the day before slabbing, when dealers had broken rolls of Mercs, Walkers, Franklins, Buffaloes, and Jeffersons that you could comb through to create a short set.

@ razorear: There probably isn't a album specifically for transitional years like you describe, but Capital Plastics used to be able to custom cut holders for multiple coins as long as it was one of their basic sizes of 5"x8", 6"x8", 8"x10", 8"x14" and 12"x12". Air-tites also has custom configurations for their cherrywood presentation case for multiple coins as well.

I am working on three different sets besides the standard Whitman folder sets. I am working on a set of British Large Pennies from 1902 to 1967. I am also working on 2 different Lincoln Memorial sets 1959 to 2008. One is all toners. I have not bought a single one. I am getting them all from roll searching, so there is no cost to acquire them. The other set is a complete BU set 1959 to 2008. I am hand picking them to be able to grade out at MS-63 or better. I am including the 60P, 60D, 70S, 74P, 74D, 74S small date/large date, and all 7 different 1982 cents. Most of these coins I have managed to acquire for about .25 to .50. Yes, the 70S will be costly, but is the grand scheme of expensive coins it is a minor player. I have been putting all three sets in 2X2s in individual binders, so I can look at them. I am labeling each coin with a digital labeler I bought to give it a nice polished look. I even added a nice illustrated cover sheet and spine. I am having a blast with these three sets.

I've long thought about the transition years collection.

I have almost finished assembling a set of BU Copper Memorial Cents. It's a small, easy set to put together pretty inexpensively -- even with the small & large date varieties. The nice thing is it fits in 2 Dansco cent pages with enough rows left over for the 2008-2010 transition. It's a nice looking set. I'll post photos when it's done (should be next week).
