I do plan on trying to contact the eventual buyer and tell him what he bought. Not easy to do given ebay's policy of hiding the buyer's identity

Steve, once feedback has been left in either direction, the identity is no longer hidden.

Steve199: Right, but...my guess is that Mr. Shyster is one of these types that won't leave a positive feedback until he gets one from the buyer...and if the buyer leaves a positive for Mr. Shyster, then that means Mr. Buyer is happy in his ignorance with the coin, and probably won't care when I tell him what happened... I need to STRIKE before all that can occur.

Perhaps you can help me figure a way to keep my neighbor's cats from leaving presents on my outdoor furniture?

Yeah you can get a battery operated sprayer that hooks up to your garden hose, and has a sensor that sprays anything that crosses its motion detector. It works, it's about $100.

Regarding the 'honest' seller. You know on the bay it's Caveat Emptor.

That's great. I reported the auction a while ago, here is the response I got:

Dear ebay Member,

Thank you for writing ebay in regard to suspicious coin listings.

Because ebay does not employ or train its Trust & Safety Customer
Support Representatives to be experts in the area of coins and currency,
we rely on expert opinions from knowledgeable people as well as reliable
third party organizations.

Your report will be reviewed by a group of members that comprise a
community watch group for coin auctions. They then confer amongst
themselves and either agree or disagree that the listings are
problematic. If it is agreed that a listing(s) is fraudulent or
improperly described, the listing(s) is then forwarded to ebay Trust and
Safety for removal.

Please be sure to check our Prohibited, Questionable & Infringing Items
pages for information on ebay listing policies and guidelines:

http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/items-ov.html

If you received an informational alert or warning, and you have
additional questions, or you have another listing to report, please
contact us at the following link:

http://pages.ebay.com/help/basics/select-RS.html

In order for us to get to you in a timely manner, please do not respond
to this email. If you reply to this message we will not receive your
email. All communications should be sent to the link provided above.

Again, thank you for your report. We appreciate your help in keeping
ebay a safe and reputable forum to conduct business.

Sincerely,
ebay Customer Support

Message: Hi,

The date on the Buffalo nickel has been restored, and the seller does
not mention it, which is against ebay policy. Removing the auction would
be beneficial to ebay.

Thank you,

Well it is gone, your reporting must have done the trick. I was unaware that used nickels could be altered in this way, since I don't collect circulated Buffs. That said, buyer beware is really the best credo when buying on ebay, I always check the feedback of the seller, how long they've been on, and what their return policy is (if any). The reason I check for all these is not all high magnification digital shots will show the slight rubs on the AU/BU unc "sliders" that are overgraded as Choice and Gem BU. Probably the great majority of unc silver coins have been dipped at some time in the past, because bright shiny cartwheel luster was what collectors wanted in the past. That said, weerdsteev, I learned something about your process, so I thank you for adding something new to the knowledge bank!

No...our reporting did NOT do the trick.

Some poor soul won it for $36.03 as The_Duke mentioned a few posts back up this thread. ebay pulled all references to the listing AFTER the auction ended. I received a reply from one of the ebay police stating the listing had been pulled and I immediately wrote back (stopping just shy of calling her a complete fool) asking her what good it does to pull the listing after the fact. I do NOT expect to get an answer to THAT question...

It does a LOT if good. Paypal will refund the buyers payment immediately upon request as in ebay's eyes the transaction is null and void. You should see the email the buyer and all the bidders gets when this happens. It stops just short of calling the seller a criminal. Don't ever think its too late. Hopefully you didn't give your reporting credibility a serious hit by being ungrateful.

Scubu - Here is an exact cut and paste of what I said:

"Akira - The auction ended BEFORE you removed the listing! Whatever you did, it did NOT prevent the buyer from winning this coin, so what good did it do?"

I'm glad to hear you say what you said. I hope that's exactly the way it works...

No proof whatsoever. They will not take your word for it and they shouldn't. For all they know you could be their competition and making it up.

This works...

This is an acid dated nickel and the seller knows it because he bought it here...

And is now reselling it as a problem free coin. He even swiped the sellers photo. More reading on this here...

If you want them to hit the button quick, send all the info you can. I guaranty that listing was gone withing 3 minutes of opening my report to the link in my signature.

Scubu: The reason I said "I hope that's the way it works" is because of this example from a friend of mine: He had some slabbed, uncirculated 1938-D nickels delisted because they were not certified by the TPG's that ebay approves of. But like my example of today, the coins didn't get delisted until after the auctions closed. By then, 3 out of 4 of his buyers had already paid for them! Worse (I guess?) is that ebay refunded the listing fees to my friend after ending the listings and after he had been paid.

I am NOT going by memory here. I have his emails (took me a while to find them) and would be glad to share them, minus his name.

True, you have a good point, scubu. I was a bit too lazy and slightly gambled on the fact that ebay seems to generally accept whatever info people send them and pull listings.

Yes, but if the buyer gets the email from ebay and requests his money back through Paypal, it's returned immediately.

Also, ebay only returns the fees on the first offense at best. Some infractions not even then. After that you don't get them back.

He likely put the grade in the title or mentioned the "grading company" which they don't consider a major first offense.
