I found this several years back, just looked in my change and there it was. It's a 1984 P. I have always wondered about the value of it.

How does the reverse look?

If it is normal, then you have a misaligned die (MAD), if you flip it over and the area around UNITED looks like the date area then it is off-center.

Either way, it's worth at least a few bucks. Nice find!

That's a nice MAD because some of the design elements are cut-off. Congrats!

More valuable than an off-center...exactly what the value would be - not sure. But I do believe these are at least somewhat scarce.

Does it damage the die to strike in this manner? Almost seems like it would or are they tough enough to take it?

I worked in a factory many moons ago and we used expensive molds. If they were run up incorrectly it damaged the mold and the employee was usually fired.

It might get away with a few blows because the collar is mounted on springs so it has some give if the die hits it, but yes eventually the die and possibly the collar will be damaged.

If the reverse is normal as suggested, it is a very misaligned die strike. maybe $45 bucks worth, possibly more. Give or take....This is a nice one.
