I'm new to collecting and even newer to roll searching.I need tips or suggestions please. I started searching a few weeks ago and have searched five boxes of nickels. In the five boxes I only found five coins pre 1950 and of course none of them were War Nickels. I have got all the boxes from the same bank which uses Brinks plastic rolls. Should I try hitting some new banks or is this an average find? Any tips would be great!

wooooooo dude new bank needed you should be getting at least 20-30 pre 1959 nickels in a box. You numbers are very very bad. I have noticed crummy numbers in the plastic wrapped nickels though. I would try another bank, or try customer wrapped rolls. I have only done 2 boxes and one was a 96% 2010 P box. Those numbers are really bad...definitely switch something up

For 5 boxes, that's no too bueno. Go to Coneca's website and familiarize yourself with varieties, gives you more to shoot at. And yes, hit another bank.

I finished a box of nickels last night - there were 22 pre-1959 nickels in there. All from my local Wells Fargo in the plastic Brinks wrappers.

I'm less than 1/2 way through a new box and so far got 2 war nickles, 15 pre 1960 a 1 buffalo full date 1937. You should be doing much better than what you described.

I've searched through 180 boxes of nickels in the past 2 and a half years, and those numbers are really bad! I have found Brinks is usually better than String/Garda, so I think you just got a skunk batch of boxes. I'd stick with Brinks, but try a different bank that perhaps did not load up on their Brinks shipment the same time the bank that you have been using did. Good luck!

Do this, go to a bunch of different banks, get say $10 bucks each in both customer wrapped and 3rd party wrapped rolls. Keep them separate or write the name and branch location on each roll. Then keep a tally of what you find. Do this two or three times and see if there may be a pattern as to which banks/branches or type of rolls produce the best results. I have done something similar to this for halves and have found that there are three banks in my area that have consistently produced silver when they have them. The rest produce nothing but clad and at rare times a silver or two. FYI, the three banks that are producers are in very small towns so you might want to look at these places also.

Go for the customer-wrapped rolls. I don't do too many nickels, but the last two times I found solid pre-'60 rolls, from different banks. This last time, out of $70 cw, I found 320 pre-'60, (8 solid rolls) and 1 War Nickel. 4-38's and lots of 40's. Had to have been collector's dumps. Good luck, ffd
