When I was born, my mother's boss at the time gave her a 1924 Peace dollar for me. I received the Peace dollar around, hmmm, cub-scout age. Well, this is the one that sparked it all; I adored polishing it up and studying it for hours. Here I am now: finally gathering all the knowledge I could every want about collecting coins and I realize that my most cherished one has been destroyed by numeristic standards from all the years of handling and polishing. This thing has a mirror finish to it, and despite the years of abuse, is still beautiful with razor sharp reeding all around - I hate to think what grade this would have been had I never touched it at such a young age. Here's the dilemma: 1) Do I preserve what is left and leave it in an air-tight or Dansco? 2) Do I carry it around everywhere as a reminder of why I love this hobby so much and wear into it the right way? Let's hear it community!

Sounds like the damage is already done. If you would like to carry it, then do so and when you get new coins of better quality, preserve them.

I agree with southerngent, the damage is already done, so you should carry it around to remind you with a great hobby it is. My pocket piece is a Indian quarter eagle that was used in a bracelet my mother owned, every time I see it in my change purse, it reminds me of her, and is bright and shiny enough that I'd never mistake for a dime!

Honestly, carrying it around and adding some wear could take it from a Cleaned AU to a plain ole VF/XF.
Might honestly increase the value, or so to speak, not to mention having a pocket piece like that is a heck of a conversation starter.

I've never had a pocket piece but I dont think I would want to either because I would rather know that my valuable family possession is safe at home rather than out and about the world. You never know where you could drop it, damage it or lose it.

I would go ahead and carry it as a pocket piece. The sentimental value is far more than any monetary value!

I would carry it.I carry a Peace dollar,Ike Dollar,And a spooned Walking Liberty half, all three have dirrerent meaning to me,but I alawys pull them out at stores, banks, gas stations etc.you won't beleive how many people see them and ask about them ,what are they, let me see them etc.it breaks the ice and from those three coins I have been able to purchase well over 300 coins over the years.People will say I have this or that and all you can do is ask if they would like to sell them most people say no but the more you ask the better your chances are.

Fatboy, I have a Walking Liberty that I carry but I have never pulled it out for others to see. That's not a bad idea as an ice breaker and if it leads to other acquisitions that would be excellent. Thanks for the idea.

So, the results are in! I've already started carrying it around. I, too, worry about losing it, but I have to say that I really enjoy being able to hold, handle and hear what our defunct currencies were all about.
I'll pop a picture up here sometime soon so I can get collectively shamed into never abusing fine coinage again!

You've already taken the first step by admitting you have a problem. You are well on your way to recovery. LOL - just kidding! I like the idea of a pocket piece, conversation starter and acquisition angle. What a great idea!

Im convinced! I'll do the same as jgnp15333! My grandfathers G-6 cleaned, damaged, and at some point glued 34-S $1. I am interested to see how this works.

Great ideas here, I too, have an old 1921 Peace dollar that has been polished and has some rim dents in it that I think I'll start carrying around. Originally it had alot of negative toning so awhile back before I knew better I polished most of it off. It didn't help the looks much and due to the rim dents I figured it's only worth melt so I just left it in a box with culls. Now I think I'll start carrying it for the conversation and possible acquisition aspects.
