Nice find, check out the N's they are full serif N's. If you have any other 1881's check them out for single serif N's they are very rare. Google in canadiancoppercoins.com they show lots of coins to watch for hope this helps and good luck on your hunt.

The numerous broken letters on obverse 1A and 1 cents occurred on the working punches, so generally there are multiple dies with each combination of broken letters. It is probably harder to find an obverse 1A or 1 cent without any broken letters (for example the 1884 obverse 1 cent has no broken letters) than examples with such damaged letters.

Hi. I have the same coin. I had guessed that worn out dies caused the errors and I guess that value wise there is no premium on this coin?

They are pretty common. Parts of the hub broke off (the hubs make the working dies) in the letters, so every working die after the hub was damaged will show the same way. Even if it was only one die, there would have been 50,000 or more struck, but I've seen these lots. Save it as an oddity.

This was identified as #S5b in Zoell's Minor Coin Varieties - 3th Edition - 1965, sometimes nick-named the "horseshoe O" it appears on both the 1881 and 1882.

It's not super-common, but doesn't command too much of a premium since it isn't a "major" variety and very people collect all of the minor varieties.

Here's an example from ebay: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/QUALITY-COP...162974732759

I should add: I have a couple of these in the 1882 year.

Don't even think about buying the ebay coin above ... it is way way way overpriced and you can find one easily raw somewhere.
