It sounds like you did well. The two large cents alone are worth at least if not more than $45 if they are good problem-free VF examples with nice round rims. Since they are relatively heavy, large cents can be hard to find with nice round rims. If they get dropped, they start looking like a stop sign. Would love to see pics!

Whether you did well is going to depend on the large cents. The other coins are of minimal value. Can't say whether the large cents make the deal without seeing them.

Thats really awesome, I always go to yard sales and try and find deals. Haven't ran into any yet! They are always asking market-price for them. :(

You did really well there. As already noted the Large Cents alone are well worth what you paid for everything. Check those Mercury dimes dates really carefully. Remember there is that famous 42/41 worth hundreds.

Quote: large cents 1847 vf 1853 vf If you're absolutely sure of those grades you attributed to them..... Then you did REALLY well ! ...... But in G4 they'd go for maybe $15.00 to $18.00 apiece.Regardless....I don't think you did too bad there ! You didn't get ripped off and he didn't get ripped off.....likely you just paid exactly what they were worth, and there's nothing wrong with that ! ...

I've been sort of preching for a long time about garage/yard/estate sales for coins for a long time. As I've said many times the trick is you have to ASK. Most people are afraid to put out many types of items for such sales. Guns, knives, swords and of course COINS. The reason is obvious. The danger of theft or doing something wrong. In most instances it really pays to just ask. I do all the time and usually not much luck. But when you run into a deal, it could be well worth the effort. Once some time ago at a garage sale I asked the people if they had any old coins for sale. A lady went into the house and came out with a jar of pennies. I estimated about $35 face value. She said it was slated for a bank on Monday. If I wanted it she wanted me to sit there and count them. I just made an offer of $50 and she took that. The bottom of that jar was all Indian cents. At home I found the NEWEST cent was in the 1950's and all the rest much older. You have to ASK.

I agree with most of the posts, it all comes down to the lg cents. If they are in good shape and unaltered you did just fine. I think as long as both partys are happy its a good deal for both of you.

Ahhh you are a lucky guy. I've been to many garage sales and I've never been able to get a good deal.

thanks for the comments guys! unlike others I do not have a camera except for a cheapo camera in which doesn't like me when I bought the coins my gf assured me that I was going to sell these coins to get more money to buy items for our apartment (more like dairy queen for her) but I have put the coins in flips and out of her sight and she has said nothing and hopefully forgot about them! pretty smart for a 20 year old eh? hehe

Nice haul from a yard sale. A couple of weeks ago, I got an assortment of about 20 off-struck cents at $2 each. It seemed like a decent price. I'll get some pics out here on the forum.
