Thanks for the reply. I know the pics are not real great. I'm pretty sure they are not gas bubbles. The top part is actually curved in the same fasion as the column. I've never seen a curved gas bubble before. In the last picture there is also a raised area at the bottom of each of the columns to the right of Lincoln. There are no other raised areas anywhere else on the coin.

The lighting in the pics make it a little hard to tell. Based on what I can see, I would have to agree with John and go with gas bubbles (I have seen them curved). But, you have the benefit of the coin in hand. Maybe some clearer pics would help.

I can't tell much by the images provided.

It does not look much like the typical gas bubbles, but also doesn't really look much like a die crack or chip. They almost never occur just sitting out in the middle of the field without being attached to a device.

I'm also pretty sure it's not any form of doubling, as suggested by the original poster. For the top of a column to show up that strongly, much of the remainder of the design would have to show up, and that simply is not the case here. The lower 'dot' is probably related to the upper line, thus would have to work in as part of the 'doubling' which it does not.

Thanks for the comments, I'll try to get some better pics and play around with the lighting to get rid of the glare. Its probably nothing, just thought I'd see if anyone had seen anything similar.

You might also try rotating the coin to catch a different light path. That might help.

Thanks coop. Someday if I have an extra 4-5 hours to sit down and read I'm going to dig into the picture taking threads on this board. O'well off to the coins show, I can't wait.
