To follow-up on my last post....
Back in 1985 when I got my first Coin World, I studied it cover to cover. Every word, every advertisement. I came across an ad that showed a "1984 D/D" cent for $59. I was like, "Wow! I didn't know any of the double mintmark coins were worth that kind of cash," so off I went looking for a 1984D cent with a doubled mintmark. I spent at least the next six months looking before it came to me that the "D/D" the advertiser had meant was to be interpreted as "Doubled Die" and he had been talking about the 1984 doubled ear cent.
See how easy using abbreviations can cause problems? "D/D" is NOT an appropriate abbreviation for "doubled die" because it is specifically used for something else. Same number of characters, but "1984 DDO" would have been SO MUCH more readable and less confusing.
