1971-S Eisenhower Proof Missing Mega Island on the reverse in the Earth to the South East of Florida is where it is supposed to be. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts, Theory's or ideas on this coin. Thanks Terry Edited by stewart 08/23/2010 10:10 pm

Looks like a weak strike to me, but now I have to go back and check my 71-S Ike proofs. Hope I'm wrong.

I believe that is the type 2 reverse. Normal type reverse for the ike proof but not sure if it was used for all proofs or not. That proof reverse is the one you want to find on a business strike 1972-P Ike as it is scarce. I found one in a bank bag a while back.

Indian 1: That's correct- the 71 S Proof does not show individual islands and it's this proof reverse that's the type 2- 1972P Mint business strike that's scarce.
The 71S business strike "BLUE IKE" has the islands showing on the reverse.
*If you find a 71 S Business Strike "BLUE IKE" with a Prototype Proof Reverse- that's a very valuable coin! I think only one has been found so far and its valued at 25 to 50 Thousand Dollars!*
Terry:
You coin looks different from the normal 71 S Proof- can you get a real good close-up pic of whats below Florida?

It's a full strike. Note the gutter next to rim. Looks more like a worn die. Note the head on the eagle. It is mushy as well.

Chuck, I took the shots of this coin a couple weeks ago and thought I had put it in the safe Spent two hours this afternoon tearing the safe apart and no luck. I will have to start looking around my other stash spot's The best I have at the moment is the original shots that I made the composite out of. Photobucket tends to shrink them a little If you want, send me a message with your e-mail address and I can send you the full size originals. about 2 megs apiece. Here are the Photobucket size originals. Edited to add Coop, Just saw your post Thanks this one has my head spinning Terry

Thoughts? Yea. Everytime I read your posts about the IKES, I have to go dig out the ones I have and compare to your latest find. Honestly, I have learned alot about them from you and the references you have given in other posts. I have three new proof sets to break open this week to fill a few holes. Nothing unusual about the Ikes, but I still keep looking. Still havent found a "peg leg" yet. Keep it coming-I need one more thing to make me crazy!

JPrine, Welcome to my Loonie Bin world I am beginning to think all of us dedicated Ike Nuts are about two new discoveries away from a padded cell. I am truly glad I could help you get one step closer to a straight Jacket. I'll keep trying to get us all there. On the Peg Legs I have found that the easiest one for me to find is the 1971-D I hope this helps with the search Terry

Waredu, That is just a mark on the mylar of the 2x2 that the coin in stored in. I wish it was a "Die Crack on a Proof" coin. I have been searching every proof coin I own for quite some time for something like that. And have only found 1 so far. A 2005 Sac Dollar Proof. Ken Potter requested I send it to him. They are quite hard to come across. Due to having to make it past tighter quality control for the Proofs at the Mint.

Coop and Chuck, I was looking for one of the 1883 No Cents "V" Nickels and guess what I run across? Of course the 71 Proof I took it out of a 2x2 and put it in an air tight last week. Under a 10x Loupe at a certain angle you can just make out the remnants of the Mega Island. Chuck (on e-mail) and Coop (on Forum) hit it on the head Worn Die. Thank You Very Much Guys

This has been an interesting thread. I may not be new to the Eisenhower dollar, but I am to the search for varieties. Keep showing your finds!

Great, Thanks for the link. I never even looked at ikes (except for silver) until just a few month ago. Made up a small list and on my first bank buy of about $130.00 face value I found the 72-P type 2, 2 ea. of the type 3 72-P, and one 76-P type 1 Now I want the 71-S PPR :)
