Just as reeded edge capped bust halves are not even considered CBH by some folks, Many vammers would not care much if Peace dollars were moved to a category like commemoratives or counterfeits or errors. They really don't have anything more in common with Morgans than do Seated dollars, (or Ikes with the exception of silver content).

Let's explore and dissect the Peace dollar together and find out just why it sucks so much. Can anyone post a couple of photos of this hideous beast to get us started?

Blasphemy! The Peace dollar is one of top 10 most attractive US coins, even though I find it difficult to grade them.

Actually Nod, I would say that it is the number one most beautiful 'design' as far as dollars go, but the coin itself didn't turn out so well, and that is the same reason that folks figure that the are difficult to grade.

Where are you Remmy? Do I need to change the title of the thread to the Remmy dollar to get you to respond?

ARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHH! OH why you gotta stir this pot so early in the morning. The Peace dollar is IMO the most beautiful design bar none. Lady liberty looks beautiful. I like Morgans too... dont get me wrong, just not near as much. I will start you off with MY FAVORITE PEACE VAM!

Very, very nice Nod, one of the nicest non-'21s that I've seen, although I never look at these things much anyway. Since the '21 is sort of a different type altogether, let me post a picture of it as well. This coin is not mine, but belongs to my good buddy Roger Burdette (I think). I hope he doesn't mind me using it. I just got an email from him a couple of minutes ago, hadn't heard from him in a while, (and am excited to get back to him, so I might be out of this for a little bit). It too, is a blazing beauty:

Yes very different. The 1921 Peace dollar had more rays to the left of ONE and under the tailfeathers. It also had a B1a reverse which was only 2 mountain peaks instead of 3 like the examples above. ALL 1921 Peace dollars were struck in high relief which carried over to SOME 1922 Peace dollars, (as well as the B1a 2 peak reverse) however early in the 1922 production moved to low relief as the other examples show. 1921 and 1922 (P) mint coins were available in Proof, however VERY FEW exist and 1 is questionable. The obverse design was a bit different on the 1921's as well. The tiara rays and hair were changed for the 1922 production (even the high relief 1922's) Ummm... Questions?

Wow, you sure know your Peace stuff Remmy. Let me ask this: Why did the relief change from high to low?

Could the reason for the Peace dollar not being as popular (despite many years with low mintages) be that the large break between 1904 to 1921 with Morgan dollars left many collectors at that time feeling like it was the end of the silver dollar. Then a big silver melt happened around that time frame (can't remember when exactly), plus they made so many 1921 Morgans that when the Peace came out, people might have been thinking "oh no, they will make gobs of these."

To me the Peace dollar design is not up there with Buffalo nickels, Indian cents, or Walking Liberty halves (or silver eagles which garnish the same obverse design) in terms of the overall beauty of the design. It's a nice design, but it's in a lower class. I do have trouble grading these, unlike many other coin types.

With that said, this is a really undervalued series in my opinion- many mintages near or below 1 million and surprisingly many of them go for commons prices in the lower grades. Most of the Morgans I think that are near or below the 1 million mark tend to be semi-keys or keys. Peace dollar has been around a long time for collectors to take notice.

One thing I notice on the obverse is that Lady Liberty seems to have a look of surprise or shock (or even horror?), like "wow we won WWI? Now what do we do as the new superpower?" Obviously the design came out because of America's desire for Peace following WW I.

Weren't they having troubles with their dies shattering with the high relief design? I will put up a photo of my 21 later tonight if I remember.

Not the desire for peace, but to celebrate the end of WW1 and the Peace of no war. Grading is simple, attributing DD's can be difficult in the lettering). I think the look on Lady liberties face is AWE. Not horror or surprise.

I didn't finish my train of thought- Peace dollar have been around a long time for collectors to take notice of them and the low mintages, yet it has not garnered the attention that Morgan dollars have. Another reason might be that Morgans were around for 26 years continuously, whereas Peace dollars only have a 14 year non-continuous run. If you take a year or two off from modern coinage, I bet interest in the Parks quarter series would plunge, for example.

Yes this I definitely true, Remmy, but this was not the only reason, and it was more of a secondary reason. The primary reason is rather silly actually. Have you ever tried to stack five or 10 unc '21s ?
