Okay, since I join this site I have really tried to organize my coins. My collection really was more of a accumulation than a collection.

From seeing what others are doing, I have switched to all Dansco albums and have been trying hard to get them completed.

In the process I have ended up with a lot of duplicates, from mint and proof sets I have broke open and from coins I have upgraded.
Some are boxed in 2X2's, some are in rolls.

For example -

Question---What-Do-You-Do-With-Your-Duplicate-Coins

I am sure this happens to all of us. My question is what do you all do with them, or plan to do with them.

I think about selling them to purchase more coins, but it is hard to get what they are worth.

Or as one member wrote here .. maybe open my own coin shop someday .. but is that just a dream .. or is it really possible?

Please post what you do with yours, I am sure there are some members out there .. that have many thousands of duplicate coins .. what is your plans for them?

Like you I have a lot of duplicate modern coins. I keep telling myself I'm going to start selling them here but haven't got started.

Most of mine are in tubes and 2 X 2's. Mostly I have cents and nickles and don't plan on giving them up. They now number in the thousands. Most are not
worth a lot of money but they probably won't be as common when my grand kids are grown. My son understands that you won't be able to buy a Buffalo nickle for .50 for many more years. They don't take up all that much room and they don't eat! Nice to have.

I sell a few here and there. I tag the ones I want to sell in my database and then pull them to have them ready. I will take pictures and then when I have a few, I will list on ebay or here. Sometimes I give them away to my nephews or other kids.

I forgot to say ... mine range from .. mostly modern BU/proof coins.
But also wheat's, Mercury dimes, Barber coins, liberty head nickels, Indian head nickels
I just put a 1818 large cent from a upgrade in the box this week ..
I guess a little bit of everything.

I can't really get it into my head what to do with them.

I just keep all the duplicates and superseded-by-upgrade coins.

I sell them, and purchase more coins, even at a loss if I need to.

What you get might be truly what they're worth. I personally would sell them though, since it'll bring you a lot more satisfaction to have new coins instead of the same old duplicates.

Wish I could be that organized. Well on to your question. I put mine into 2x2's and then into the Cowen's thumb-cut coin pages I have in several different binders. If it carries a high premium ($100+) it goes into a direct-fit airtite and off to the bank safe deposit box it goes, maybe someday to be sent away for grading and slabbing.

Sounds like some members keep them all and some sell .... or trade.

Fatboy ... you got me curious .. what sets are you working on.

As for the desk .... I try to keep only what I am working on most at the desk.
And a roll top desk works good for me .. lot of places to put things.

Most of my coins are in my safe .. or SDB. That can make it hard I have boxes or rolls/coin tubes.
many of them are mixed date coins. Lately I have been trying to put extra sets of quarters together to sell at two local coin shops .. so can get to be a mess when I am sorting thru rolls.

I normally re-sell most of my duplicates for more funding to buy other coins. After years in the hobby, I notice that we tend to become insatiable in terms of looking for more nice coins, continuing to endless upgrading...thus I go for sacrificing my previous coin thru re-selling duplicates and acquire new types of rarities
You have a superneat/nice working table GoldRush

Heh. 80% of my collection is 1921 Morgan dollars. Duplicates? Nope - "additionals."

I resell or trade them. Since you have a lot of newer coins you might not get much and you might have to wait a long time (maybe decades) before you get a handsome return. Instead of keeping them you could sell them now or trade them. Someone mentioned keeping them for their children but I have known people sell their fathers or grandfathers collections for much less than they were worth. Sometimes these benefactors do not want to deal with the whole grading-dealing-auctioning process. Maybe you can sell the ones that have a lower grade in order to buy newer once.
