My first post and I am throwing a wild shot!

I can't find a lot of info on these but please look at what I found and let me know what you think. I am always leaning toward Mechanical Doubling but in this case, I and several people I have sent this to think it's true doubling. Can anyone shed some light?

This pic has the image of the coin in question and a normal one below it. The doubling is on the face.

This link is to a large scan of the image and is pretty good in quality.

Cheers! (and big cheers if it's a true double)

Scott

My only problem is that some people I have called said there is "no such thing" and dismiss the issue. I recognize that the chances of me finding a relatively unknown instance of doubling are basically nil - but it's still fun to dream about and the picture is very interesting. What/where would you suggest taking this to get a confirmation?

Thanks again.

Listen... new varieties are found every day. Even ones once thought to never exist. That is not a shared metal Machine Doubling. It is possible its a double strike, (also cool) but highly unlikely. It looks like doubling to me all day long.
Looks similar to the HotLips Morgan dollar variety...

I do not do much outside Morgan and Peace silver dollars, but CONECA I believe is where you would send it.http://hermes.csd.net/~coneca/

That's serious doubling on the portrait--wow!
I'm looking forward to hear what the experts have to say

Sorry, I'm not see a doubled die. If it were the rest of the coin would show the same doubling. Is the area in quest showing flat doubling? Then it is Machine Doubling. If rounded a closer look would need to be made. But looking that far away is not conclusive.

". If it were the rest of the coin would show the same doubling" Sorry... dont know how to quote, but as I have stated before, I am no expert on JFK's, but in the Morgan and Peace world, there is PLENTY of spot specific doubling. A coin that is doubled does not have to have a FULL DDO to be doubled.

It's hard to tell from the pics and whether or not they were taken through say a plastic case where that might be a reflectiton. If that is the real coin laying on fabric with that level of doubling appearance, I'm in with the "definitely a DDO variety" camp. Great find it if is. Keep us posted.

The coin is Machine Doubling. You can send it to whomever you want, but please don't have your hopes up about it. Unfortunately it is not the doubled die others here are telling you it is.

I beleive the morgan vams etc. because the attributes are actually
die doubling and not hub doubling. You can have legit doubling on just one or a few areas of the devices. This half I agree is not DDO
The east west direction and perfect flat lne up of the doubling shows well.

Nice example of Machine Doubling but still only worth 50 cents.

they are the same thing

There are some extreme examples of MD or SD in the Peace series all of which are shelf like, this does not have a shelf like appearance to it. Send it to ANACS and let us all know how it turns out. It would be a great find if it is legit. Plus ANACS is cheap enough that if it isn't, you didnt waste a ton of money to know for sure.
