It happened during the strike. Had to be soft enough to not flatten the rim on either side. But a struck through error of some type. I have a struck through coin through wire. You can see it on both faces of the coin through the rims and on the edge of the coin. I don't have images of it right now. Maybe I should re-take them?

I just purchased a struck thru wire Lincoln from coppercoins. I'll have to post a picture.

I am glad coop posted that pic because it reveals a diagnostic for struck through cloth. Notice that you can see the woven fibers of the cloth perfectly impressed into the coin. I am not saying all struck through cloth errors will look like that but the vast majority of them will have a patterned impression.

It might be. I didn't remember who posted it. Post an image of your coin and I will added credit for the image.
A larger image would be nicer. It would show the detail of the cloth better.
