I recently found what looks like a 1937 brass plated cent while roll searching. Has anyone seen this occurrence in the 37 cent or does copper sometimes turn this color? I know the color has been found in 5 other years 83,85d,97,97d and 98 but I haven't found any info concerning the 1937.

First, the pre 1982 cents were not plated. If it appears brass it must be a poor mix of the metal used to make the planchet. On the Zincolns, they are plated. Some years have the golden appearance on certain years. Some call them brass plated and sell them. I save them in case they might determine for sure what they are in the future. But it has to do with the plating process.

Most cents that are the wrong color are cleaned.

The mint error "brass plated" cents can only come from 1982 to date because the process of accidentally causing the brass plating involves just that - 'plating'. Cents were not plated prior to 1982.

Thanks for the information. I'll probably keep it just as a matter of interest.
