I thought the MM position can vary quite a bit on these older coins, because they punched the mint mark by hand after the coin was minted?

No, in general mintmarks can vary in location a fair amount because they are punched into each DIE by hand, not coin. But in the case of the 1916-D Mercury dime there were only four reverse dies to make the entire mintage. So there can only be four positions for the mintmark.

The 2 RPMs on the 1916-D four dies sure narrow doing things, don't they?
I haven't looked at enough Mercs to be good, but that does look off--and that coloration.
Here's a direct link to the page showing the 4 MM positions.

Seems to be an outstanding fake. I based the fake conclusion only on the images of the 4 real placements at the link provided.

Can you post pics of the whole coin? It looks to be a fairly high grade coin that could have been worth more than $5000 if it had been genuine.

I agree if this is fake, it would be a artistic job. I would really like to hold it in hand and examine it myself.

It appears to be very similar to die 4, but it should tip slightly right. The ANA Counterfeit Detection book says that on all four dies the D tips further right than the E of ONE. On this one it appears to be upright or even slightly left.

It looks like the mint mark has been added post mint to me. The other diagnostic for the 16-D is the reverse rotation slightly tilted. Can't see this on the coin without a whole picture comparing obverse and reverse. The "D" on this one just doesn't look right. Don't understand why the entire reverse would wear in one color and be distinctly different around the MM. IMO

Give it an acetone bath. Wont hurt it a bit, but if its glued on, it wont be for long.

It's either glue or solder holding that D on, imho. The discoloration around the mm gives it away.
