Position of the MM is wrong. Also, it appears that residue surrounds the MM. If not PCGS,NGC,or ANACS, avoid!

My buddy owns this and picked it up with a full set. I told him I thought it was fake and now I think it is confirmed. He will not be happy in the AM.

The surfaces immediately around the MM looks like a different color then a little further out.

I thought the MM position can vary quite a bit on these older coins, because they punched the mint mark by hand after the coin was minted?

I would like to see a picture of the MM position at an angle to double check if this was a real glue job. I do hope your friend didn't spend a fortune for this if is not genuine.

Not sure but even in the Red Book the MM looks different from this photo and the angle also appears to be off. Regardless there are some other things to consider here. 1. Has the sale been finalized so not returnable? 2. Does your friend plan on selling that coin or collection someday? 3. Did he pay a really high price for that set based on that coin being real? 4. Are there other coins in that set that too may be suspecious such as a 42/41, 42D/41, 21, 21D, etc.? The reasons for my above statements are unless he plans on a resale and can not return that set, his best thing to do would be to send to PCGS or NGC for authenticating. If he never plans on selling this set, I'd keep my mouth shut for now at least. If he can't return that and if it is fake, why make him misserable. Of course if he does plan on someday selling that set, best find out now.

If that is a fake it is a darn good one, or I am just ignorant of the series...
and I can assure you the latter is true :)

He is a Jewelry / coin dealer and he owns the full set from some estate he bought as well as the nickle and penny set. I did not think the thing looked right when he showed me this one. I will post a second photo at a different angle. It would not be surprising to find a good fake on an old set as counterfeiting did not just start up.

@mycrob I asked this same question a while ago, and was informed that there were only four die pairs that made the 1916 D https://goccf.com/t/70564
