I have a question for everyone here. When you go into a coin shop and see buckets or bins or indian head nickels and indian head pennys does it ever make you feel like all of our finds are so small compared to the coin shop guy who sells 1 indian head nickel for a dollar. It makes me feel like my super important find in my mind is actually meaningless to the general idea of big time collectors.
I would like to hear what you guys have to say about this...

Thanks Nate

I enjoy roll hunting no matter what I find (although silver or Indians are always nice!) and do it mostly for fun. However, keep in mind that all of those coins in coin shops came either directly from the mint or were picked from circulation. Roll finds are just increasing the coins that are available, allowing more people to have them, and I think that's great for anyone who has any found in circulation coin!

I agree with RollSeeker. To me a nice find in circulation is one that fits into my collection. I don't really care if it would have cost me $1 to buy it from a dealer, or $10. Of course when you find something that's worth more than that, it is a bit of a different feeling, but that isn't what sustains the interest in searching.

Zestykat, "What's with the negative vibes Moriarty?" The thrill of the hunt is why we love the search. To me, going to a coin shop is like a guided tour of a game preserve; the game is almost tame and the thrill of the wild just isn't there.

I'll never forget the first time I decided to get an unc. silver nickel for my jefferson collection.
I was so thrilled at the prospect of owning one. So I ask the guy if he has a BU 44-s and he brings out
an enormous bag of War Nickels, thousands, and says "should be one in there". As I'm looking through he finds his BU rolls
ands has a ton of those! I could not believe the inventory this guy had. He dumps a roll of 44-s on the counter and tosses one my way.
I was out because he was letting them crash into each other and he was touching the faces with his hands.
The guy had no respect or love for coins and it kind of broke my heart a little.
My point is -- with everything; if its too easy is looses it's appeal

I really do wonder why coin shop owners take so little care of the lesser coins, because in my mind lesser coins need to be treated with the same respect as the most expensive. Coin shop owners have lost the feeling of the hunt and have no respect for making the new shoppers and or new roll hunters feel like there finds they get small as they may be very important, when people are discouraged (not me) they usually quit because they feel what they do is of very little importance... Thats just how I feel though.
Rest in Peace

Too many coin shops and dealers are so impersonal. It's all about the benjamins, as, unfortunately, are most things. My prized coin is a 1798 large cent. It might only be worth $100 or so. Not much in the sceme of numismatics. I like it for the historical aspect. George Washington might have had my coin in his pocket. I feel the same about all type coins. I roll search now because I can get some coins for face value. I don't invest in metals or put away high priced coins for investment. I'm not in it for the money. In addition, I get depressed every time I see a new coin publication touting million dollar auction results or ads offering coins for tens of thousands of dollars. All this ranting is jusy mho.
