Hi again,

Since I started roll searching and reading "Looking Through Lincoln Cents" I view pennies in a whole new light.

Does anyone have any thoughts on why the mint mark is so small and why it appears Lincoln's jacket is missing some detail? I'm probably just being overzealous, but I'll never learn if I don't ask. Thank you.

Carl

The weakness of the strike on the mm and jacket may be that it was Struck Through Grease at those points.

Or the area on the coat may be die abrasion to remove a strong clash. The strike on the 1973 Cents have the high rim because of increased pressure. That's common.

Thanks for the insights. I never realized how many variations there could be.

Yeah, this has nothing to do with grease. It's actually over abrasion of the surface of the die, which removes detail from the field outward. This effectively makes the detail lose its base first, then the higher points.
