Here's another one I am struggling with--this is a Randall large cent with some reddish toning and some mint luster still there! I see die breaks, and am hoping that I see weakness in the strike instead of wear. Does this one make the MS range? As always, thanks. I really appreciate your opinions!

I think there is a trace of wear on the high points of Liberty's hair and on the wreath. I see luster and the color could be original red-brown. I'd call it AU-58. It's a nice coin with lots of eye appeal.

I agree with Jaobler, this is AU 58, maybe 55 if there is not very much luster. Really cool example though, thanks for sharing!

I agree, it does appear to have been circulated. There is some light wear in the hair. I agree with AU-55 to AU-58. Just b/c the dealer has graded it as MS-63 doesn't mean he was dishonest. He could have really believed that. Grading is incredibly subjective and he may have really thought it was MS, but he could have been dishonest too.

This is what MS63 looks like for this coin:

If I'm reading the lighting correctly, your coin has just the slightest bit of circulation wear. Jaobler (as usual) got it right.

These are tough to grade with pictures....Dave that coin (if yours) is a hammered strike, OP's isn't. From pics it does look AU though.

That's a beautiful coin. Realistically it's an AU55 but many of these early pieces end up in MS holders and this coin is a good example of why. I would not call a dealer dishonest who labeled it MS63 because they probably wouldn't have sold it for less than MS63 money.

Another one that I have gone back and looked at. I do believe that it is wear in the hair and on the weath. There is some poor strike in the stars. I love the broken die on this variety. Dave's coin is awsome and both coins are great examples.
