My local dealer didn't want to buy a bunch of $1 silver certificates (1957, 1957A, 1957B). He said he has hundreds in the back and can't get rid of them. He told the guy to spend them, so I took 10 of them for $20. One of them is a star note. They are all pretty worn.

How did I do on this? I don't think I go them for a good price, but is $2 for a common silver certificate way too expensive?

most dealers I know sell '57's at $1.25 each. Star note is probably worth $2. Check em all for low runs/odd SNs, ETC.

$2 each is a bit high. Maybe $1.50 each is what I'd pay.

curses... I offered him $1.50 but he wanted $2. That's why I don't usually do impulse buys. I couldn't stand the idea of them going into circulation and me not getting any of them....

even though you didn't get a great deal I would have probably done the same thing just to have them. I would have probably said "look if you spend them like the dealer said to do then all you will get is face value, for 1.50 you are getting 1 1/2 times face" and see if that changed his mind but if not I would probably still have bought them like you did instead of letting them go into circulation

I bought an 1849 open wreath gold dollar on impulse.

The price? Thirty shillings. (one Pound ten Shillings). That was before Great Britain's changeover to decimal currency. That would have been about $3.50 in U.S. currency at the time.

The place? a coin show in Manchester, England.

The condition? I would say MS 63.

The time: 1970.

In the Scottish dialect you would call it 'A wee ripper!'
