I was looking at my new Charlton's and noticed the PEI large cent still has a medal and coinage price division. I'm lucky enough to have lots of large cents. I have 37 PEI examples. Every one is coinage. I haven't been methodical over the years but I have checked at coin shows to find a medal example. I've never seen one. So what's the story on the PEI medal configuration cent? It has a low price but does it even exist?

I haven't studied these at all, but I think only the specimen strikings were made in medal alignment. Charlton prices circulated coins in medal, but unless they are impaired specimens, I think that is an error. As I said, I've not studied these, so I might be wrong.

Thanks, bosox! I think it's an error too. I've not seen one but they're priced very cheaply. I have some other questions and pics for you in the days ahead. I think you'll be interested. Have a great evening!

Yeah, they're pretty common. I don't have the largest number of large cents as the most committed on this forum will have but I am in the running...

Tamarin... do you have any varieties of the 1871 PEI?
If so, which do you have?

The Griffin book will be reprinted again by Charlton late this Fall. Wait until then to pick one up. The first reprint of Jack's 1992 work (Monograph1), that had some photos added, have many photo/description mismatches. Wait for the new edition.

Btw, Griffin listed 12 date spacing varieties for the PEI Cent .. again the book is categorized about digit spacing. There will be more varieties that just affect the obverse.
