Well, in part it depends on what you like. For $1000 you can build an almost-complete set of high-grade Liberty nickels, for instance. Or a pretty good start on a set of decent-grade Indian Heads. Prefer bigger and silver? You can get a great start on a set of Walking Liberty halves in the low to mid MS grades. Or in a completely different direction, $1000 should be enough to get you proof sets dating back to about 1950 or so.

Buy an 1893CC Morgan in AU condition and you'll have a couple hundred left to buy a few more commen date Morgans in Uncirculated.......

I do like Wei Fun's walking liberty idea. You see for me its not so much about re-sale or how much its worth. Its all about the coin. I do really enjoy the classic Liberty coinage (as in Sprucansailor thread on "I'm sick of presidents". Also I have always wanted another CC morgan.....alas my predicament.

Well the 1893CC has always been a classic and is somewhat affordable especially in VF (I previously said AU...oops) plus a couple of high mintage Morgans to look at, and there you go!!

If it were me, I would probably buy one nice key date with that instead of a bunch of common stuff, but that's only my opinion.
If you like Morgans, you could look for the nicest 1889-CC you can afford.

Check out the current thread on Bust Half Dollars, that might be the series that you would want to spend your money on.

Quote: My address is...... You beat me to it! Quote: I do really enjoy the classic Liberty coinage... Then this is probably where that $1000 is best spent. Just determine whether you would rather have a few high-end key coins or a complete set in an album. Once you set the goal, spending the money is easy.

I personally would hope that the precious metals market would stabilize and level off by that time, then I would be looking at three or four classic gold coins to add to my collection. Say maybe a $1, another $2.50 or maybe a $3 piece. I suggest you look around at different types of coins and dwell over some of the great suggestions that other members have offered up here and By January you might have decided what direction to go in.

Key date certified coins. PCGS,NGC. 16-D Merc, 09-S VDB, 23-S SLQ...etc. I'd stay away from gold right now with the price per ounce. Wait till it drops. Like Tim said, classic gold is always popular, but wait.

Beat me to that one too. However, not kidding. Now here is a thought. Did you read the post frm the guy out of work and sold off all his coins. Find out where he lives, use that money to hire him, he'll use it much better than most. If you really have an itch to jus buy a coin or two, why not go to a coin show and look around. You'll either blow the entire amount or get so overwhelmed you'll leave with the same amount you came in with. Myself, I'd just continue wasting it on more and more amd more of any coins. Or you could put it in a bank, wait a few hunded years for the interest to amount to lots and lots and then really have something to talk about. Here is a point of interest. Not long ago gasoline for cars by me was $3.97/gal. Your $1,000 would have purchased 251.89 gallons. One of my cars gets 9 miles to the gallon so that would have allowed me to drive about 28 miles. I went to a coin show last Sunday and it was 14 miles so with gas at that price, I would have gone there and back and not been able to buy a coin.

Personally, I'd go for quality over quantity. A couple of nice key date coins in any series are always nice to own. In Lincolns, I'd look for a slabbed 1914-D. It'd also be a good idea to look at some slabbed gold coins. I think gold is going to continue to run up.
