Coin is up for auction, and I like it. Seller has a lot of damaged (scratched, crud, etc) Indians but this looks ok to me? So what do you all think about the grade/condition and if it's been cleaned? thanks in advance.

Is it just me or.. the face of the Indian doesn't look right, and also the "2".

I've bought from this seller before and have looked at this coin before. The "2" did look a little strange to me at first too, but after looking at other examples of 1862 IHC, that was apparently the way it looked. I bought an 1857 FE from him before. It's a really nice coin, but after getting it, I believe it had been cleaned and started to retone. He didn't mention cleaning in the listing. As for this coin, it initially looks MS, but due to the few rim stains/marks and the scratches on the face, I would say Choice AU. The scratches may also indicate an abrasive cleaning too. However, either way, it looks to be a high grade IHC. He does offer a 7 day return policy, so if you get it and really don't like it, you can return it. You will be out shipping though.

Looks like it should be AU+, but I don't see any hint of luster which would scream to me as being improperly cleaned.

The 2 looks ok to me. They used a very stylish 2 that year.

Sometimes mottling occurs where dirt was removed. I'd say in the upper AU range too--it's hard to be exact from pics. As for the "2" digit, 1862 had the most fanciful design, which changed every decade:

Thanks Shafta--I thought it would make an interesting comparison. These aren't my pics--I just grabbed images from coins on Heritage.

Very nice composite with the two's - thanks for the work there.

Interesting, huh? Notice how the date details get rounder over the years? I think that's due to larger runs for each die. By 1902, there would be no way to retain those fancy serifs on the 1862 date.

The evolution of the series is one reason I love the Indian cents.

I would guess it was cleaned also. But it is a great example, and I love that fancy 2, got to get one of those.

Nice photo montage on the "2" variations. Coin looks high AU and possibly MS. Can't detect anything that looks like cleaning. I'd be willing to bet on the 7 day return policy if you like the price.
