Assuming it's real, and that's a big assumption, I'd grade it AU55. $3 gold pieces have been continuously counterfeited for over 150 years and while your piece looks genuine, it needs professional authentication.

with everything bherring said, grade included. Great pictures, and if I were a betting man, I'd bet on it being genuine. I inadvertantly purchased a fake $3 gold years ago, so am aware of the more obvious warning signs, and this one doesn't have any of them. However, some fakes are extremely deceptive, so definitely get it certified.

Hmm. Coin isn't mine at the moment, but it very well could be. That being said, if I do get it, I'd like to send it to PCGS, but don't have a membership. If anyone on the forum has a PCGS membership and would like to submit it for me, it would be much appreciated. Obviously, I'd be looking for someone credible with a good and long-standing history on the forum. I would paypal the PCGS fees plus a couple bucks, of course.

Wear is very slight, just a hint of rub over the wreath high points and ribbon, and on the feather tips. Light friction is evident in the obverse fields.
Depending on luster, AU-55 or even AU-58 seems possible. I agree it should be graded to confirm authenticity. Do you have any local dealers who work with PCGS? That might be a better option than mailing it back and forth between collectors. Alternatively, if you have more coins to have graded you can join PCGS at Gold or Platinum membership levels which include a number of "free" submissions. The Gold International rate is $149 and includes 4 submissions. You of course need to pay for insured shipping both ways.

I'd be willing to submit it for you. I'm thinking about trying to cross my ANACS Bust dollar. When submitting remember the shipping and PCGS handling charge often exceed the $30 certification cost.

If you wanted to submit on your own, use ANACS. No membership is required.

I am thinking a bit closer to AU-53 to 55.

As bherring1964 said, might be less hassle to send it to ANACS yourself.

I'm with Prethen on this one. There are scuff marks on the fields like it's been on some flat surfaces.

Does everyone seem to think $1200 USD (with guarantee of refund should it come back bagged) would be a good deal?

You need to define "bagged". If PCGS puts it in a Genuine holder, to me that's bagged. Some would say if it slabs Genuine then it was not bagged because it is authentic.

If the seller is trustworthy and guarantees it will slab problem-free, then $1200 USD is a good deal. As noted above, EF is as low as this piece would grade.

I concur that you need to get it slabbed and assuming it's genuine, I'm going to throw my hat in the ring at AU55. Very nice coin. Nothing wrong with a PCGS Genuine slab, but I agree that it's a lot like being bagged. Very hard to sell a PCGS Genuine slab. Don't remember the last one I sold. Good luck. Bherring has a nice offer to send it in for you along with his coin. Might be worth a try.

The $1200 price is appropriate for an original VF-30, or a cleaned AU.

What does being bagged mean? Can someone link me to something I can read up on?
